Basics of Translation and Interpretation

Business
The world is becoming more and more globalized with technologies like the Internet and transportation systems that can get people from one side of the world to another in roughly a day. With this level of fluidity between cultures and geographic places comes the issue of how to deal with translation problems and finding the best way to transfer information from one culture to another. Everyone knows that it's notoriously difficult to come up with a translation of a text or a speech that adheres to both its overarching and nuanced ideas. Luckily, a growing market of instantaneous translation and interpretation equipment is providing businesses, NGOs, and diplomatic departments with options for making sure everyone is on the same page. The basics of these technologies and strategies are explored in this article.

When You Need Spoken Interpretation

Rather than struggling to understand another party that speaks another language than you, make sure that you can comfortably discuss business, politics, or other matters. If you are a businessperson, diplomat, or another individual who travels frequently and is part of important, multi-cultural deal making, you will want to have a great interpretation company and equipment on your side. There are 2 major types of interpretations used when there is a meeting, speech, or other type of spoken communication between parties of different languages.

Consecutive Interpretation

The first type of interpretation and translation is consecutive interpretation. Consecutive interpretation is when a speaker gives information and then pauses so that an interpreter can relay the same information in the listeners' native tongues. This type of interpretation is used especially when there will be questions asked frequently or different routes in the conversation will depend on how each party reacts to the other's delivered information. When you have a small meeting between people with different native tongues, this type of translation and interpretation can keep misunderstandings from arising and can ensure that everyone knows what is being communicated in short intervals.

Simultaneous Interpretation

Simultaneous interpretation is more suitable for speeches or other contexts in which a speaker will be giving large blogs of information uninterrupted. In many cases, a speaker will deliver a speech through a microphone, enabling those who speak his or her language to understand the speech aurally. Additionally, people in the audience who don't understand the speaker's native tongue will be issued headsets of various types (depending on their individual needs) wherein an interpreter will simultaneously convey the speakers words in the listener's native tongue. It can seem impossible for a person to translate only several seconds after someone speaks something, but professional interpreters are trained to be experts in the languages they know and to convey precise meaning very quickly. In many cases, interpreters for the UN or large corporations will be given copies of a politician's or CEO's speech ahead of time, so they are prepared for the content of the complex information and can be even faster.

Equipment for Interpretation

There are lots of different types of equipment you can use for your interpretation needs. Headsets, already mentioned, are a major component of simultaneous translation. You will want to choose the headsets that are right for you based on the number of people in attendance, whether you anticipate hearing difficulty, and your budget. You will also want high-quality microphones to be among your interpretation equipment, so that your speaker can be understood by your interpreter and your interpreter comes in loud and clear for your listeners. Less equipment is needed for consecutive interpretation. You will only need a highly trained expert interpreter who has been vetted to meet strict standards.
