Things You Didn't Know about Famous Art

Art and Culture
There are several pieces of art dating back to several decades that have been and continue to be popular owing to their uniqueness. Some of these pieces are so popular that they resonate with people of different ages, races and generations across the world.

Even then, unlike the popularity of the art, there is a lot of amazing information revolving around these famous pieces that remains unknown. Here are things you didn’t know about famous art:

There are those who hold that Leonardo da Vinci’s popular painting of Monalisa is believed to be the artist’s self-portrait in drag. Others believe it is a portrait of Lisa Gherardini a woman who belonged to the prominent Florenting family and was the wife to a wealthy silk merchant. The portrait is believed to have been commissioned by Lisa’s father.

It is also interesting to know that when Paul Cezanne painted the Mont Sainte-Victoire series he was only eight miles from Montagne Sainte-Victoire’s peak. Thus, the mountain occupies a small portion of the scene that was in front of him yet it dominates most of his paintings.

The other thing that you may not know is that the Last Supper, another of Da Vinci’s famous work and can be viewed at the convent of Sante Maria delle Grazie in Milan is that the original work included the feet of Jesus. However, builders installing a doorway inside the refectory in 1652 cut into the bottom center of this mural effectively looping off the feet of Jesus.

Although James Whistler did a painting of his mother popularly known as Whistler’s mother without considering it an arrangement in Grey and Black No. 1, it was exhibited at the Royal Academy as an arrangement in Grey and Black. However, Whistler himself considered it an interesting picture of his mother and thought that the public overlooked the identity of the portrait.

Michelangelo’s David is another piece of famous art. What many people do not know about this sculpture is that the marble from which it was made was initially cut for Agostino di Duccio, an artist who wanted to turn it into a statue of Hercules. However, he later abandoned this sculpture that was due for installation at a Florentine cathedral leaving the marble unused for over 10 years when Antonio Rossellino started working on it. However, he too abandoned the work as the marble was difficult to work with. It is then that Michelangelo began working on it 43 three years later.

Georges Seurat painting also has an interesting twist. He used zinc yellow to add yellow highlights to the lawn in his famous painting A Sunday afternoon on the island of La Grande Jatte. The lawn has yellow has darkened to brown.

The Thinker, a popular sculpture by Auguste Rodin originally had a 70cm version in 1880 being a central component to massive sculptural work known as The Gates of Hell. The piece first known as The Poet was inspired by Dante’s Inferno before the redubbed sculpture was exhibited in 1888 as a depiction of what it is today in 1904.

In conclusion, some of the Famous Art that are popular around the world have interesting truths behind their creation as well as their being that is little known such as that discussed above.
