Whether you run a commercial laundry room, or do the family washing at home, consider these vital safety factors. Commercial laundry rooms are a hive of activity. Send dirty linen down a laundry chute in a hotel and it’s collected, processed, cleaned and dried, then prepped, ready to go back to guest bedrooms. Laundry rooms are busy, bustling places. People work non-stop in this type of environment and due to this, safety is a major issue. Practical safety solutions are available though, use some thought and laundry rooms should be efficient, without creating any dangers. Follow this advice whether you manage a commercial laundry room or simply have non-stop loads to clean within the family environment. Safety tip 1 - Lock machine doors Washing machine and tumble dryer doors should be closed at all times whether it’s washday or not. This is especially important within the domestic setting, where small, inquisitive children or curious pets could wonder what life is like inside the drum of a machine. Doors have to be shut during washing or drying cycles. They should be kept closed and locked shut when washing machines or dryers are inactive to prevent a potential disaster. Safety tip 2 - Mark bottles clearly If you pour the contents of washing powder or fabric softener into another container clearly the mark the outside of the bottle so other people know what it contains. Again, this is extremely important within domestic laundry rooms where young children could be interested by the contents of the container. Marking bottles prevents you from mixing up stain removers and cleaning agents too, reducing the chances of washing day mistakes. Safety tip 3 - Keep lids on nice and tight After using stain removers and fabric softeners, make sure you put the cap back on the bottle, and turn it tight. Left missing or too loose and small, curious children could try to tip the contents out of the bottle, or worst still, try to ingest the funny looking liquid. Safety tip 4 - Regularly remove lint from dryers Used regularly and tumble dryers suffer strongly from a build-up of lint. This is easy to remove, simply wipe around screens, vents and common areas where lint accumulates, don’t allow your dryer to become congested due to a clog of unwanted material. Left to stack up and lint causes a fire hazard, to prevent this happening, remove it regularly after tumble dryer use. These tips are designed to make your laundry room safer. The next time you collect washing from a laundry chute, put our suggestions to the test.
