When most people think about burial options, they think the only choice is between being buried or being cremated. While this is an important matter to consider, there are actually many burial options available to you. This article will discuss a few of the more common burial choices available. Mausoleum Mausoleums are an above-ground burial option and they can be either public or private. In public mausoleums, anyone can choose to be placed in a crypt in that mausoleum after their death. Anyone can enter the mausoleum to visit the deceased who are entombed there. Private mausoleums are usually owned by families, and only members of that family can choose to be entombed there; visitors are also usually limited to member of the family or close friends. Within a mausoleum, you can choose to be entombed in an individual or companion crypt. Like with burial plots, a companion crypt allows a person to be laid to rest with their loved one beside them, while single crypts are intended for individuals. A plaque is usually hung or carved into the covering of the crypt in place of a tombstone. Personal Crypts In areas with a high water table or areas that are prone to flooding, in-ground burials are not an option; you can imagine what a horrific site it would be if a graveyard were to be flooded and remains became raised above the ground. In these areas, personal crypts--also known as lawn crypts--are the burial option of preference. These above-ground structures are just slightly larger than a coffin and provide a clean, dry place to lay the body to rest. Cremation Cremation has become more popular as burial spaces become more limited around the world. However, cremation does not eliminate any of the burial options listed above. If you choose to be cremated, your ashes can still be buried in any of the above-mentioned ways. However, you also have the option of having your ashes spread over water, in a forest, or anywhere else that is meaningful to you.
