Visitors to the beautiful rural area that is today home to Trading Boundaries may now know our distinguished-looking building as the complete shopping destination, cafe, gallery, Vintage Bar & Boutique In Sussex, but it wasn't always this way. Indeed, many who take in our gorgeous Georgian manor house and grounds may remember it in its final days as a pub in the 1990s, although there is so much more to its incredible story than that. The building was constructed in the late 18th century at the request of the first Lord Sheffield, John Baker Holroyd, and was central to his estate, which housed his guests, servants and horses. The decision to build at Sheffield Green on a piece of land owned by Lord Sheffield was based on its location equidistant between the two towns of East Grinstead and Lewes, en route to the then-growing town of Brighton. Despite this route having been diverted through Cuckfield by the time construction commenced in 1777, the majority of the traffic continued to use the former route, making this the ideal location - and the resultant building was certainly one that would catch the eye of travellers from far around. The text accompanying its listing as a Grade II* building of historic interest in the 1950s described it as consisting of three storeys with nine windows, red brick that was "largely covered with ivy" and a "centre portion [that] projects slightly and has a pediment-like gable containing an attic window." Right up until 1910, the building was being offered for tenancy along with the nearby Vigoes Farm, the estate then selling it to Tamplins Brewery. The property went through a succession of tenants during the 20th century, many of them very short-term, until its conversion into a nightclub in the late '80s. This period was one of renewed success for the former coaching inn as it played host to well-attended jazz-funk nights, but by the '90s - having reverted to a pub - it was in a state of disrepair only remedied following Michael Clifford and Tracy Thomson's purchase of the property in 1998. Work duly got underway to transform it into the stunning countryside attraction that it remains today - a must-visit shop, gallery, cafe, vintage bar & boutique in Sussex selling the finest in imported Indian furniture and textiles, along with amazing modern furniture collections, home accessories and gifts.
