So how did this company get started? It was founded in 1903 in a small shed by William S. Harley and brothers Arthur and Walter Davidson in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. A couple of years earlier a 21 year old William Harley completed a blueprint for an engine design that he wanted to put in his bicycle. The Davidson brothers actually built the first Harley-Davidson in 1903 and in 1904 the first dealership opened. By 1906 the company had 6 employees and the first production site was up and running.
During the beginning years of the company the United States military was the largest customer that they had. Many of their motorcycles were purchased and used in both World Wars. There are records indicating that there were 90,000 units produced for this purpose.
After the wars the Sportster was introduced in 1957 and is still available today. Bikes were manufactured and became a part of daily transportation. In 1960 the company had some ownership changes, went public, and merged with American Machine and Foundry. In the early 1980's AMF sold its stake back to the current ownership, which includes members of the founding families.
In the 80's and 90's a variety of model families were introduced. Some of those are the Road King, Softail, and FLT, and the classic Electric Guide models continued. Since the turn of the century Harley-Davidson has continued to maintain its image as the classic American motorcycle; however, they have begun to reach out to other riders with higher performance models. They are also working to engage younger riders by releasing some edgier versions of classic models.
The company focuses on both touring and racing bikes. They continue to make improvements to the engines and structure of the motorcycles. They are continually adjusting and trying new technologies and materials, while all the while keeping the Harley-Davidson mystic.
Harley-Davidson fans are loyal and have a culture all of their own. If you are not a rider, you may find that you are still part of the brand with the variety of accessories that are offered as well. Clothing and jackets are big selling items also. Many young kids and adults like to sport the Harley name in their apparel. Even those that have never been on a motorcycle have attachments to the brand and the excitement it creates.
