How to Find Consistent Work as a Contractor

Business
Being a contract worker comes with a lot of big perks. For one thing, you are your own boss, and who doesn't love that? On top of that, you only take as much work as you want to do, which means that you work on your own schedule and can take off as much time as you want whenever you want.

But of course, there are a few drawbacks, the biggest of them being that it can be difficult to find consistent work. When you're a contractor, you never know when you might hit a dry spell and have no income. That's why it's important to use appropriate networks and develop connections of your own as you work. If you're just starting out as a contractor, here are a few tips to help you find consistent work.

Online Networks

Contract work is becoming more and more common these days. As millennials enter the job market and businesses begin utilizing technology more and more, telecommuting is becoming a popular option, and that includes contracted labor. There are many websites out there that offer free job leads for contractors.

When you sign up for one of these websites, they will ask you about your skills, expected pay, and desired type of work. They may even have you take a few online tests so that you can show how proficient you are in certain skills. Once they've learned these things about you, the website can help match you with certain employers who are seeking contractors with your skills. You can also browse jobs to find something that interests you.

You will then be able to place bids on jobs, and the employer can review your bid and your skills to determine if you are a good fit for what they need. If you are, they can hire you to complete the job for them. All transactions are conducted online, which protects both you and the employer.

Personal Connections

Make sure to get the word out about your contract work by telling your friends, family, neighbors, and social network connections. You never know who may be in need of your skills, or what connections your friends might have. For example, someone you used to go to school with may be starting their own business, and they may need a website designer, content writer, or graphic designer to help them get started.

Contractor Networks

Find a way to network with other contractors, whether that be friends who are also contracted workers, or an online network for contractors. Sometimes, a contractor gets more work than they can handle at a specific time. When this happens, they can refer the excess work to you. This can be a great way to get extra work, or even find new clients who will bring you recurring work. Never underestimate the power of networking!

Provide Great Work

In the end, the best thing you can do as a contractor is to provide excellent, consistent work for all of your clients. This is important for a couple of reasons. First of all, when the work you provide exceeds expectations, clients are more likely to come back to you with more work. This is the absolute best way to get consist work.

Additionally, if a client is happy with your work, they may refer you to others looking for contractors with your skills. If you are using a website that offers free job leads for contractors, like those already discussed, then your clients may even have the opportunity to rate your work and leave a review. These ratings and reviews will be available to anyone viewing your profile. Obviously, if potential clients see that all of your former clients were happy with your work, they're more likely to hire you. This can help you find new clients and more consistent work quickly.
