Design Tips to Make the Most of Your Small Spaces

Home Improvement

When you are doing some redecorating or renovations in your home, it is easy to overlook the small spaces that aren’t seen as often throughout the day. When you are doing any redecorating at home, don’t forget your smaller spaces. You can make a huge impact even in smaller spaces like the bathrooms. Here are some essential tips to make the most of your home interior design in Dallas, especially in your smaller spaces like your bathrooms.

Enter Focal Point

The design in small spaces like bathrooms should largely be simplistic in nature. This involves keeping patterns, colors, material, and texture small and uncomplicated. On the other hand, you should incorporate a strong focal point. Some ideas for a good focal point that work well in a bathroom would include a large mirror, pendant light fixture, or a piece of artwork up on the wall.

Incorporate Storage Wherever Possible

For how small bathrooms tend to be compared to the rest of your house, they sure do have a lot of storage needs. Whenever possible, try to incorporate or create storage space for all of the things that you have in your bathroom that would otherwise be taking up counter space or on shelves. Work out a recessed cabinet or a built in niche to keep toiletries or towels tucked away yet still accessible. The key to decorating small spaces and bathrooms is to keep everything as unobtrusive as possible while maintaining functionality. Keep baskets and bins out of the way such as in niches or cabinets.

Keep It Clear

One mistake that many people make when designing bathrooms is to divide the space and do things to close it in. One common thing that is done in bathrooms to make a small space even smaller is with shower liners, curtains, or fogged doors. Frameless shower doors will help open up your bathroom when used with clear glass, and the absence of frames helps prevent the space from being broken up and appearing boxy or segmented. As an added bonus, frameless shower doors are easier to clean with regular glass cleaner than a curtain or liner, which you will have to put through the wash or wash by hand. Another opportunity for you to create some more space is by getting rid of your vanity in exchange for a pedestal sink.

Lead the Eyes Upward

As much as possible, find ways to lead the eyes upward. Vertical lines can help accomplish this, as well as incorporating style elements and accessories up towards the ceiling. A hotel shelf above the door or in the shower can lead eyes upward and create the illusion of visual space, as well as keep the rest of the room less cluttered and busy. Talk to a designer about the appropriate position for lighting. Having lighting above eye level rather than right at eye level or even lower may have the opposite effect on your bathroom than it should.

Use Your Lighting Wisely

Finally, the best way to make the most of your space, highlight your design, and showcase your unique personality is through lighting. In small spaces, maximizing the amount of light in the room and using it appropriately is everything. Recessed lighting is great over the tub or shower, while sconces or wall lights can be used at the mirror. Unless you are selecting a pendant light as a focal point, keep the light fixtures to a minimum in your bathroom. If you have it within your budget, installing skylights or adding windows is a possibility, natural lighting can really brighten up the space and make it look more spacious. A professional interior designer can help you identify and make the best choices for your home interior design in Dallas.
