What Is Water Softening and Filtration?

Business
When you are looking into home improvements, there is one that will impact almost everything you do in your home: water filtration and softening. Everyone uses water for a variety of purposes each day. From washing clothes or dishes to showering, the water that gets piped into people's houses is a big part of day-to-day life. If there are contaminants or harmful substances in your water, it will impact you in an expansive way. Investing in softening and residential water filtration in St. Paul can give you peace of mind knowing that one of your most precious resources is being taken care of so that you and your family get a healthy product. When you know what's in your water, you can rest easier and feel good about your family's quality of life. Read on for some methods and benefits of water softening.

How Water Softening Works

There are several types of methods used to filter and soften water, but they have similar end goals. Water is not simply hydrogen and oxygen, it contains lots of different substances that can be beneficial or detrimental to people's health. You've heard of water-borne illnesses. Sometimes water can carry bacteria that can make people sick. Commonly, water contains traced of minerals and metals, like calcium and magnesium. Bicarbonates and sulfates are also present and can have a negative effect on the water that is carrying them. Water softening seeks to remove the minerals that leave behind soap scum and limescale build up. You can notice these buildups yourself by checking for white or off-white crystals around your tub, faucets, shower heads, or inside your pipes.

The Types of Common Methods

Reverse osmosis and ion-exchange polymers are the 2 most common ways that a home filtration system will use to remove magnesium and calcium from the water supply. Ion-exchange resin is a support structure made of small beads. Most of the beads are porous, allowing water to flow through them. Fresh resin contains sodium ions in their active state. The magnesium and calcium in the water that passes through the resin filtration system are replaced with sodium ions. The salt that is left in the water furthers the process of softening the water overall because it will also act as a purifier.

When you use reverse osmosis to purify and soften water, a membrane is stretched across where water is passing through. The water molecules are small enough to pass through the pores in the membrane. Magnesium and calcium ions are too large and are washed away from the membrane to a different location. This softening will not leave sodium behind, but you will need to replace the osmosis membrane regularly, as it will wear out gradually until it doesn't function as efficiently.

How It Can Benefit Households

Households can benefit from one of these methods of softening in many ways. First of all, contaminants will be removed, along with the magnesium and calcium. This will help ensure that the water is clean. Without the magnesium and calcium, your plumbing and shower fixtures will last for a longer period of time. Soap scum won't build up on your tub and shower, forcing you to replace them or go through lengthy cleaning processes. This type of residential water filtration in St. Paul can make your skin and hair feel cleaner and lighter, as there will be less hard water minerals constantly drying off the top layer. Softening water can help those on a sodium-restricted diet when reverse osmosis is used. This is because sodium and the other minerals will be swept away and not ingested by the person drinking the home's water.
