6 Ways to Keep Your Home Cool

Home Improvement
When the temperature starts to rise, the first thing on everyone's minds is to crank up that air conditioning. However, along with being expensive and a large use of electricity, it is not the only way to keep your home cool. Here are a few simple ways you can bring down the temperature in your home.

Install Shutters

Shutters are often overlooked, but are an amazing technology. They provide ventilation, security, shade, and storm protection all in 1 simple device. They can even make your home look better. If you are looking for shutters in Greenville, SC, you are in luck because there are some great options available. If you decide on shutters with adjustable slats, you will be able to adjust how much sunlight comes in, giving you the power to control the heat gain inside your home. Shutters work so well because they block the sun from hitting the window pane in the first place, which greatly reduces the amount of heat that flows from the windows into the home.

Avoid the Oven

Heating up your oven will heat up your house, even if you have the air conditioning running at full speed. If you can, try to avoid cooking anything in the oven or on the stove in the middle of the day when temperatures are at the highest. Try cooking outside on the grill or eat cold meals such as sandwiches and salads for lunch.

Plant Vines

Planting vines on the side of your house will not only add a visually appealing effect, but it will also help keep the heat off of your walls. By shading the walls from the sun, creeping vines can help reduce temperature fluctuation by half, which can make a huge difference when temperatures are rising and falling throughout the day.

Insulate Your Home

Leaky windows and doors can be a major culprit when you are trying to keep your house cool. The fewer leaks and more insulation you have, the easier it will be to keep the temperature of your house down in the summer, and will also help keep it warm in the winter. Sealing air leaks can be easy and inexpensive if you know what you are doing. Adding insulation is a bigger investment up front, but can pay off rather quickly when your heating and cooling bills start to lower.

Use Fans Strategically

A carefully placed fan can help circulate the air throughout your house, helping it be less stuffy. Ceiling fans are a must in hot temperatures, as you can run them for the fraction of the cost of running an air conditioning unit. Be sure that you have them spinning the direction that pushes the air down rather than pulling it up. Although they will not keep the entire house cool, ceiling fans help evaporate moisture from your skin, which keeps you cool. You can also place portable fans in open windows at night to move cool air around while you are asleep.

Maintain Your AC Unit

It isn't enough to install an energy-efficient unit with a programmable thermostat and then forget all about it. In order to keep your bills low and enjoy cool temperatures during the summer months, you have to keep your equipment maintained. Dirty AC filters block air flow and make it harder for your unit to keep your home cooler. The unit's evaporator and condenser coils also need to be regularly checked to make sure they are clear of dirt and other debris. A small amount of maintenance can go a long way to keep your unit running smoothly.

As you can see, there are many natural ways to keep the temperature down in your home. Before you start running your air conditioning, try some of these tips to see if you can save yourself some money. You will be surprised the difference it can make to simply install some shutters in Greenville, SC.
