And of course, self-respect can never be overvalued. Obedience In taekwondo, students are expected to follow instructions immediately when they are given. Class instructors will often hold drill sessions during their classes, where they will shout out a command and students are expected to perform a certain move in response. They must follow the command immediately and correctly. This teaches discipline and obedience. Obedience is also vital to the students being successful in sparring and competitive combat. Students who fail to follow instructions are much less likely to be successful competitors, so this encourages further obedience. Self Control Many parents worry that enrolling their child in taekwondo will cause them to become violent, or may encourage them to pick fights at school. After all, nobody wants their kid to be the bully from "The Karate Kid." But thankfully, the students of Cobra Kai are nothing but fictional. In fact, children who are enrolled in martial arts classes are taught, first and foremost, that the techniques they are learning are for self defense, and that they should never be used to intimidate, injure, or harass another person. The purpose of martial arts is in the name--to martial the body and gain control over both thoughts and actions. Taekwondo helps teach students to control their emotions and reign in violent reactions to situations. The goal of taekwondo is always to discourage violence, not encourage it.
