Did you know that over 250,000 breast augmentations are performed in the United States each year? That number is ever increasing. While it might seem that women have become more and more obsessed with natural breast enhancement in Kansas City, breast augmentations have been around for almost a century. What may seem like a newer procedure actually got its start before the 1900’s. In 1890, Austrian doctor Robert Gersuny began experimenting with breast augmentations. Because he noticed that there were females who were dissatisfied with the size of their chest, he sought out to find a solution. Women who were concerned about their small chest size would sign up for this questionable procedure in which the doctor would inject paraffin directly into the breast tissue. While it would increase the overall volume and size of the chest, the paraffin would eventually harden and appear lumpy. It also caused an astronomical amount of infections. What started out as an extremely popular procedure began to lose steam. Eventually by 1920, the procedure was halted because of the health concerns. However, because women still had the desire to increase their bust size, doctors continues to experiment with ways to make it happen. Shortly after paraffin injections were abandoned, surgeons began trying something different. They started by extracting fat cells from women’s abdomens and buttock areas and transplanting them in the chest. While it might have been healthier than the previous experiments, the body often times absorbed the transplanted cells. This caused the breasts to appear uneven or return their previous size. Plus, the scars that were left behind were hideous and caused women to lose interest. Because of the fear of the health and physical repercussions, many women steered clear of surgeries. However, that didn’t stop them from trying to boost up their breasts. Falsies and bra-stuffing became all the rage during the 1940s and 1950s. While women were experimenting with non-permanent alterations, surgeons and doctors were striving to find a new way to permanently increase their cup size. In the late 1950s, doctors began placing polyvinyl sponges in women’s chests. However, after a few months of being placed in the breast, the sponge would shrink and harden. This caused severe infection and inflammation. In some cases, cancer became an outcome. Due to this failure, surgeons began injecting patients with many other substances and pockets, trying to achieve some sort of success. Success in the augmentation field later occurred during World War II. In japan, prostitutes were injecting their breasts with silicone in order to enlarge them. They found that this would attract many of the American soldiers. Once word traveled to the U.S. that this was happening, American girls jumped on board. However, because the silicone was being directly injected into the women’s breasts, infection and discoloration was frequently happening. However, in 1961, Dow Corning had a breakthrough. Using the popular silicone, they created a prosthetic pocket, or implant, that could be placed in the breast. Once this was released, over 100,000 women lined up to have it implanted. Over time, the FDA placed regulations and restrictions on which type of silicone implants were safe. This lead the doctors to develop a safer alternative; the saline implant. Now the most popular type of implant, the saline implant can be filled and shaped however the patient would like. With so many women looking to improve their figure and restore their youth, it’s no wonder that breast augmentations are so popular.
