The septic tank system is especially important in areas where there isn’t a regular sewage system to take care of waste water from the house; it works efficiently by separating any solid waste from the waste water and passing the water towards the drain field where it is absorbed into the soil. Septic tank pumping is an important exercise because it will help in removing the solids from the waste water so that the drain field doesn’t end up being clogged. You don’t have to think you are living in a different era simply because your home has a septic tank. Most homeowners don’t know exactly how the system works and they normally have tens of questions to ask. How often do I clean it? Good septic maintenance is essential but this doesn’t mean that it should be cleaned every month. How much cleaning is done will be determined by the volume of the tank in addition to the amount of solid waste that gets inside the tank. While some people insist that it should be done on a regular basis, this is a job that should be done at least once every 10 or so years. How do I maintain a septic tank? If your tank is constructed well and you operate your waste system accordingly, you can be sure that it will stay odorless for decades and you won’t need any major septic maintenance. There will only be those rare occasions when septic tank pumping will be required. A well designed plastic, concrete or fiberglass septic tank has a lifespan of close to 50 years. How can I put off pumping the unit? Septic tank pumping is one mess of an exercise and so it should be something you want to do every so often. However, you can put off the exercise for quite some time if you are careful in how you use the entire system. Some important things you must remember about septic maintenance include: Flushing: Only human waste should be pumped down the toilet; make sure that anything else that should not be flushed away is safely thrown into the bin; when it comes to this rule there are just no exceptions. Be water wise: Avoid wasting water by letting the sinks and toilets have running on them unnecessarily, always make sure that any leakages are repaired as soon as they are discovered. Laundry: There is no room for skimping with laundry, always make sure that you wash a full load of laundry, this may be a simple cycle but it generally helps in septic repairs and maintenance. These may look like simple tips but when it comes to septic tank maintenance they play a pivotal role. Keep in mind though that under normal circumstances septic pumping should be done every 3 to 5 years.
