Vacations come in all kinds of different packages. Some people want to relax at a resort, some people have kids to entertain, and still some people want to spend their time putting their body to the test. Route 66 is a historically significant road known by several names including the Will Rogers Highway and the Mother Road. Before the advent of the modern interstate highway system, Route 66 was the only way from Chicago to California. The road covered a vast distance of 2,448 miles and played a huge part in getting people out to California during the great depression. As time went on, however, and as the highway system became more popular and eventually created new paths from Chicago to California, Route 66 became less important and less popular, leading to its removal from the highway system in 1985. Why by Bicycle? Despite the fact that this route is no longer a federal road, many states have noted its historical significance and maintained their portions. It is now considered a historical route and is open for recreational travel. One of the best ways to enjoy Route 66 is by bicycle! Cyclists get to see the world in a whole different way than motorists because they get to take their time doing it. From a bicycle, the whole world seems just a little bit slower and more manageable. Sights to See Some of the interesting things you'll see along Route 66 include Cadillac Ranch and the Painted Desert. Cadillac Ranch is located in Amarillo, TX, and features a bunch of cars planted into the ground. Wonder what is so cool about seeing something so weird? If you bring your own spray paint, you have the owner's full permission to spray paint his cars! Natural American Beauty Speaking of paint, the Painted Desert is located in Arizona near the Grand Canyon and Petrified Forest. Its beautiful bands of different shades of pink make it a breathtaking sight. This area is part of the badlands which is located near the Four Corners area. In most cases, cycling tours allow for special sightseeing at this national treasure, so be sure to ask when you book your trip. When you're here be sure to see about visiting the nearby Grand Canyon and looking at the fossils strewn all over the Petrified Forest. (Just be sure not to take any home, as it is a federal offense.) Endless Bits of Americana Many of the other sights to see are windows to the past and include things like the famous Wigwam Motels, Ed Galloway’s Totem Pole Park, and Roy's motel and cafe. All of these landmarks have historical significance and have become a part of Americana over the years. If a trip like this sounds like an awesome way to spend your vacation time, the first step to enjoying it is finding a company that does it and signing up. Due to the length of Route 66, this trip often takes about a month to do in its entirety.
