Getting Your Lawn Ready for Winter

Home Improvement
&

With winter on its way, you might be tempted to stop caring for your lawn. After all, it’s going to be frozen for a few months anyway, right? While that may be true, the cold season is the perfect time to get your grass prepped and ready for the upcoming year. By taking care of it now, you might just see that your lawn is more luscious when the springtime comes. Here are a few ways your specialists in lawn care in Kennesaw, GA, recommend getting your lawn ready for winter:

  1. Don’t stop mowing it. While it might seem counterintuitive, it’s important to keep mowing your lawn. Until the ground freezes, maintain a 10-14 day mowing schedule. This will keep the lawn growing and getting the necessary sunlight.
  2. Aerate the lawn. By aerating your grass, you allow water, air, nutrients, and fertilizer to reach the grass roots. Then, it will stay in the earth and allow your lawn to grow back greener and fuller the next year.
  3. Get the leaves off of the ground. Unless you plan on using them as mulch, be sure to rake the leaves as they fall. If you don’t, the leaves can begin to stick together and smother the grass. This will prevent it from getting the air that it needs and can kill it or breed bacteria and fungus. If you are thinking about using your leaves as mulch, the pieces should be smaller than an inch in diameter and spread in a thin layer of the sod. This will ensure that your grass is able to breathe.
  4. Fertilize, fertilize, fertilize. If you only fertilize your lawn once a year, now is the time to do it. While grass grows much slower during the cold weather, the roots continue to grow. By fertilizing right before winter, the nutrients will penetrate deep into the soil and stay in a reserve for the grass to use when it wakes up next spring.
  5. Take care of the weeds. If you don’t get rid of the crab grass and dandelions now, they will come back with a vengeance this spring. Plus, if you have fertilized and aerated the lawn and you don’t remove the weeds, they could soak up the nutrients that you have spread on top of your sod. This can cause them to grow quickly once they wake up when the weather turns warm.
  6. Fill in any bare spots. Using a lawn repair mixture, fill in any bare spots. Fall is the best time to take care of any bald spots and give your grass time to heal. By using this mixture of grass seed and fertilizer, it will sit in the soil and begin to grow for months before the springtime comes. This ensures that by the summer months, your lawn is full, luscious, and as green as ever.
  7. Call in a professional. If you are unsure how to prepare your lawn for the winter, it’s best to leave it to the professionals. By calling a lawn service company, you are leaving your grass in the best hands possible. Not only will they take care of any bald spots, weeds, and leaves, but they can help you to prepare to do it yourself for the next year. With an expert handling your landscaping, your yard will look lovely, even during the cold winter months.

Whether you decide to handle the winterization of your yard alone or call in a service to help with lawn care in Kennesaw, GA, it’s important to do something. By preparing your lawn for the cold weather now, you are ensuring that your grass will be full and luscious come spring time.
