How to Share a Closet with Your Spouse

Home Improvement

Living with your spouse can be difficult. With different upbringings, there are probably quirks and habits that drive you nuts about each other. Fights about the toilet seat, types of towels, and flavor of juice can all cause issues. If you have a lot of clothes, the closet can become another sore subject. Sharing a closet in Salt Lake with your spouse should not be an issue. If you are looking to organize your shared space while maintaining your relationship, check out these tips:

  1. Divide up the closet. If you haven’t set clear boundaries as to what side is yours and what side is his, it’s time to do so. Otherwise, your blouses might slowly start to overtake his side of racks. This can be frustrating for him. While he might not have as many pairs of shoes as you do, it’s still important that he has his own space, too. Whether you decide to divide the space down the middle or divide it based on the amount of clothes each person has, it doesn’t matter. You just need to find something that works for the both of you. Each of you will appreciate having your own designated space to store your belongings.
  2. Keep your side neat. Nothing will drive your spouse crazier than keeping a shared space messy. If you are used to throwing your jeans on the floor at the end of the day, it’s time to change your ways. After you get undressed each day, be sure you put things where they go. Don’t kick your heels off and leave them in the middle of the closet. Another helpful tip is to put clothes away right after you fold them. This will keep clothing piles from forming around your closet. Keep things nice and neat. Your husband will appreciate the fact that you respect the space that you both share. After all, it is his closet too.
  3. Organize, organize, and organize. The more organized your shared closet is, the easier it will be to share. Invest in bins, shoe organizers, and racks. Then, organize your closet together. Not only will it be a bonding experience for the two of you, but it will help to keep things looking nice. Once everything has a designated home, it will be easier to keep things clean and to keep off of each other’s nerves.
  4. Sort through your clothing frequently. At the beginning of each season, go through your closet. Make a pile of all of the items you don’t wear anymore, or that are damaged beyond repair. Then, either throw the items away, donate them, or try to sell them to a second hand shop. By purging your closet of all of the unnecessary pieces, you keep things from getting overcrowded. This will help both of you to manage your space easier. Plus, it will help to make room for anything new you decide to buy.
  5. Be patient. Sharing a space can be difficult, no matter how large or organized it is. If you find that you and your spouse struggle to share your closet, be patient. Put forth the effort needed to ensure that things stay nice and neat. Then, tackle any other issues that arise together. Sharing a closet shouldn’t create a rift in your relationship.

If you and your husband struggle to keep your shared closet in Salt Lake organized, try calling in a professional. There are plenty of closet organizing companies that can help your space to become neater. With an expert on your side, your closet, your sanity, and your marriage will be better than ever.
