Kitchen Hood Cleaning 101

Home Improvement

You dust, you mop, you shine, you vacuum, you disinfect, you de-grease, and you scrub your kitchen regularly. What on earth could you have forgotten after a long day of deep cleaning? Unfortunately, most people forget one important part of deep cleaning their kitchen: the kitchen hood above their stove. Cleaning your kitchen hood can be a tedious task, but it needs to be done properly.

What Happens if Your Kitchen Hood is Not Cleaned?

If kitchen hood cleaning in Seattle is so important, why do so many people not do it and never seem to notice the negative effects? Do not mistake this task as unimportant because it is so commonly unnoticed. What many people do not realize is that the air quality in their home can be significantly lowered as the days go by without the hood being cleaned.

What is worse is that this consequence of forgetting to clean the hood is hard to detect, but it can have negative effects on the body. It can also make your kitchen smell greasy, no matter how much you clean. In commercial kitchens or large kitchens that are heavily used, it can even become a fire hazard.

Can You Clean the Kitchen Hood Yourself?

Yes, you can clean the kitchen hood on your own; however, it may not be as effective as hiring a professional to come quickly do the job for you. To clean a greasy kitchen hood filter, you must first get ready to make a mess, because it is not going to be pretty. If it has not been cleaned for a long time, the filter is going to be packed with grease and is quite ineffective in doing its job.

Fill a sink or a bucket with hot or boiling waterthe hotter, the better. Add 1/4 cup baking soda and a squirt of dish soap, and swish it around. Submerge your filter and let it soak for 10 to 15 minutes, depending on how caked with grease it is. Using a dish scrubbing brush, scrub the filters. Then, rinse the filters and pat them dry and, if needed, leave them out to finish drying.

With a de-greasing cleaner, wipe the inside and outside of the kitchen hood until it is clean. This may require a lot of wiping and a lot of cleaner, depending on how often you perform the task. There are some solutions on the market specifically for cleaning your kitchen hood that work well.

How Often Should You Clean Your Filters?

How often you should clean your filters depends on the type of stove that you use beneath your kitchen hood. If you use a solid fuel stove (using wood or charcoal), your hood should be cleaned at least once every month. For charbroiling and wok cooking, clean your kitchen hood four times a year. For moderate volume cooking with an electric or gas stove, clean your kitchen hood every six months. For kitchens that are not used so often, such as church kitchens or seasonal operations, you may only need to clean them yearly.

Please note that these are general guidelines for a cleaning schedule. You should also use your own discernment as to how often your kitchen hood should be cleaned, judging upon how often you use the stove and what you cook. As long as you do have a regular cleaning schedule at the right frequency for your kitchen, your hood and filters will work well all year long.

For heavy duty kitchens, hiring a professional in kitchen hood cleaning in Seattle is the best and only way to go. Be sure that you hire a reputable professional in your area. Check their pricing and call them to ask any additional questions you may have about their services.
