There are many benefits to starting your lawn from sod in Greenville, SC. You don’t have to wait to start enjoying it. You already know your lawn is healthy and all you have to do is wait for the grass to take root. You also do not have to worry about plugs or seeds growing in unevenly or not at all in some parts that might be more compacted or rockier. However, all of these great benefits of laying sod are moot if you do not properly take care of your sod after it has been laid down. Here are some of the things you will need to do to ensure a healthy lawn and great looking grass going forward. Irrigate Regularly for Three Weeks Just as with any plants, your newly installed sod requires the right amount of water to stay healthy and grow. You should apply ample water to your new sod within 30 minutes of it being installed. You will then need to water it thoroughly every 1 to 3 days, depending on your local climate and weather conditions. The sod needs to be kept moist until the sod roots. Rooting usually takes between 1 and 3 weeks to occur so just make sure the grass stays moist but not soaking for that time. If you are soaking your new sod, then you are actually discouraging growth while encouraging disease. Roll It with a Lawn Roller After you have soaked your sod and it has dried enough that you can walk on it, go over the entire area with a lawn roller. This will ensure that the sod makes solid contact with the soil. It also eliminates any small bumps or air pockets left in the soil or sod after installation. Get Out and Mow the Lawn Mow your new beautiful lawn about a week after the installation occurs. The grass should be about 4 inches tall at this point. Be sure that you know what species of grass you have installed, since this will dictate how short to cut the sod, but typically the average recommended length for most grass species is about 2 ½ or 3 inches tall. For your initial mowing and probably for subsequent mows, leave the grass clippings on the grass and spread them around. This will return the nutrients from the old grass into the soil and make for a healthier lawn. Know How Much and How Often to Fertilize Before installation, you should think about having the soil on your property tested. This will help you figure out what type of fertilizer to use and the best application for it. New sod is usually ready for fertilization anywhere from 4 to 6 weeks after installation. If you have researched soil composition and have had the soil test done but are still lost as far as fertilization is concerned, work with a landscaping company that can provide you with the best results and the healthiest lawn. Be Aware of Foot Traffic and Overall Use Finally, be aware of how much foot traffic your new lawn is going to get. At least for the first couple of weeks after installing your sod, you should try to keep people and animals from walking on it at all. The roots of your new grass need some time to be able to take root and spread. If at all possible, avoid any heavy use of the lawn at all for about a month afterwards. Whether your yard is currently just dirt, hardscape, or you are wondering what in the world to do with it, there are many benefits of laying sod in Greenville, SC. Protect your investment afterwards by knowing how to take care of your grass with these tips.
