The combination of books provides weight control ideas that will help in menu planning, as well as the science behind ketogenic thinking. The author suggests that switching to a ketogenic diet will provide an alternative to diet pills. The pills tend to contain caffeine and other substances which do not promote healing of the conditions which are the underlying cause of obesity. Ketogenic principles are effective in changing the way the body operates so that it burns fat instead of glucose which comes from carbs. The basic premises of the ketogenic diet include obtaining up to 75 percent of daily calories from high fat sources. Only 5-10 percent should come from carbohydrates. The amount of protein is carefully calculated. The principles of a ketogenic diet have been found to alleviate the symptoms of a number of different diseases. In some cases, switching to the principles of ketogenic eating can be said to have cured the disease. Some of the diseases which are affected by changing dietary habits include epileptic seizures, cancer, ALS, Alzheimer's, diabetes, aging, Parkinson's, brain trauma, mitochondrial disorder, autism, migraines and depression. The author is Vanessa Olsen, a resident of Waterloo, Ontario, and a graduate of Ryerson's School of Nursing in 2010. Her current career is as a sports nutritionist.
