When summertime rolls around, everyone looks for the next best thing in hair removal. And though there are some great options on the market nowadays, each one comes with pros and cons. We all wish there was an easy way to make that unwanted hair go away (imagine a day when you never had to shave!), but unfortunately, all methods require a bit of sacrifice on our part. Here are just a few different ways to achieve that same beautiful and hairless look. Shaving This is the standard way of hair removal for both men and women and, though it is a bit of a pain (and really expensive!), it’s probably the easiest way for consistent hair removal. Shaving can be done every day, but it doesn’t last very long. Depending on the person, shaving can last a day to a couple of days. But, the cons of shaving are numerous. Shaving tends to encourage ingrown hairs, which can be extremely painful on certain parts of your body. Shaving also runs the risk of cutting yourself, especially with a new razor, and when running over some harder to reach areas. Despite the fact that shaving comes with some unpleasant side effects, it’s still one of the most popular methods because of its ease. Waxing Waxing is a great (and painful) option for those who want their hair removal to last a little longer. With waxing, you are not only completely hair free, but it will stay that was for weeks at a time. Unfortunately, waxing is pretty painful as your hair is essentially ripped out of your body. On top of that, the wax is usually hot and if you are applying it to a more sensitive area, you may be in a lot of pain. Waxing also will cost you anywhere from 30 to 90 dollars a session, so be prepared for that cost. If you choose to try waxing yourself from a box at your nearest drugstore, beware: it will not turn out the same way as a salon wax, and you will most likely be disappointed. Depilatories Another option that you can purchase at any drug store is a depilatory cream. This type of cream is similar to shaving cream except that there are chemicals contained in the cream that weaken the hair follicle so that you can essentially wipe the hair away. This is similar to shaving in that it removes the hair just below the surface of your skin and will not last very long. Sometimes, depending on the cream you purchase, the depilatory won’t work very well and your efforts on this front will be null and void. Another con for this type of treatment is that these creams commonly have a strong and unpleasant smell. But, this is usually painless, other than the uncommon irritation. Electrolysis Electrolysis is the only FDA approved treatment for permanent hair removal and is the most painful treatment out of any of the available hair removal or hair reduction treatments. With electrolysis, a fine, needle-shaped electrode is applied to the hair follicle and the hair follicle is then shocked with an electrical current. These sessions are very time-consuming and can get expensive. Though all areas of the body are approved for this, smaller areas are recommended simply because of the time a larger area would take. A plus is that, when compared with laser hair removal, electrolysis can treat any type and color of hair or skin. If electrolysis is done incorrectly, there can be scarring and skin discoloration and it’s generally an uncomfortable procedure, though extremely effective in providing permanent hair removal for life. Laser Hair Removal Lastly, laser hair removal in Boston is a great option for those looking for permanent hair reduction and sometimes permanent hair removal. Though laser hair removal is expensive, it doesn’t hurt as terribly as electrolysis, though the sensations are comparable. Laser hair removal also cannot be completed on certain skin types and hair colors because the lasers target melanin (a pigment that gives hair, skin, eyes, etc. their colors). It is a great option for long-term removal and doesn’t cause any lasting scarring or damage. Overall, shaving, waxing, depilatory creams, electrolysis and laser hair removal in Boston are all great options for hair removal and some may work better for some people and others for others. Choose what works best for you and good luck in achieving your hair removal dreams!
