6 Reasons to Send Your Kids to Private School

Education

Private high schools in North Shore have a great reputation for academics, but there are many more specific reasons to choose a private over a public school for your child. Take the following 6 reasons into consideration when making this big decision for your child's future.

A Safer Environment

Private schools are often more close-knit than public schools and this discourages dangerous behavior and bullying between students. A study done by the Fraser Institute in 2007 found that 72% of parents of children in private school felt that their child's school was safe. This in turn enhances their educational growth and achievement.

Students at private schools learn to have great discipline as well, which will help their success continue far beyond high school graduation.

Smaller Class Size

Class sizes vary even from private school to private school, but overall the teacher-to-student ratio is much lower in private schools vs. public schools. Small classes allow teachers to be able to focus on each student's weaknesses and strengths and help them grow as a student and perform better on exams. In a study by Bruce Biddler and David Berliner in 2002, the educational researchers found that the smaller the class size, the better the average student performs on academic achievement tests.

Passionate Teachers

In the Fraser Institute study, 91% of parents said that the teachers were the main reason they chose to enroll their child in a private school. Many of the teachers have advanced degrees in their field, so they are both highly qualified and passionate in the subject they teach your child. Students often look to their teachers as role models, and the lower ratio of teachers to students make them more accessible to your child if they need extra help or advice.

Shared Educational Philosophy

In public schools, you get what you get based upon where you live. But if you go with a private school, your options are much more open. Many private schools have specific attributes they look to develop in their students, from leadership to creativity. You can choose a school based on your child's unique talents and not just send them somewhere because you happen to live in the neighborhood. A little extra travel time may be very well worth it for a more personalized education.

Great Extracurricular Activities

Generally, private schools are thought to not have much to offer besides great academics. But depending on the school, that couldn't be further from the truth. Many private schools offer competitive sports teams depending on demand and the popularity of given sports in a particular area. Whether your child is interested in music, art, sports, or anything else, they will be able to find many activities that interest them at their private school.

Stanford University found that students involved in the arts are more likely to have higher attendance and are more motivated to learn. Academics alone can be stressful, so having a choice of extracurricular activities with the ample resources private high schools have will give your child a chance to unwind and be more involved with their classmates.

Increased Parental Involvement

Most private schools rely on the open communication between parents, teachers, and the administration. They understand how important family is to a child's education and work to involve parents more than public schools do. Advisory committees made up of parents are common in private schools, and these committees work to maintain great communication between the parents and the administration.

When parents share a common goal with their children in private high schools North Shore and are involved with their education, it also strengthens the parent-child relationship.
