What to Do with Your Junk Car

Automotive

Is your yard full of old cars that haven’t moved in decades? It may be easier than you think to get rid of them--and you might even make a profit in the process! There are many places to get cash for cars in Florida, and other companies who will tow away your junk car at little to no cost. Here are some ideas of what to do with that car that’s just taking up space in your garage or driveway.

Trade It In

If you plan on buying a new car, most dealerships will offer to buy your old vehicle as long as it still runs. You won’t make too much money on the deal, but it’s one of the easiest ways to get rid of an old car. You won’t have to wait for a buyer to come along, and the dealership will take care of all the paperwork to transfer the vehicle out of your name.

Sell It to a Friend

If you know of someone who’s interested in fixing up old cars, they may be willing to take your junk car off your hands. Best case scenario, they may even pay you for it! You can also post your junk car on a website like Craigslist in case there is someone in your area who would be interested in taking it. Many people fix up old cars as a hobby, and can arrange to have the vehicle towed off your property themselves.

Donate It

Many junk cars can be donated, whether or not they still run. If the car is in relatively good working order, you can donate it to a local charity or non-profit organization. You’ll get a receipt and be able to deduct it from your taxes, so you’re still technically making money on the deal.

If your car doesn’t work, contact high schools and mechanics’ schools in your area. Most are always on the lookout for cars that their students can work on. They may be willing to pay you for it, or your donation may be tax-deductible. At the very least, you’ll be getting the car off your property and will know it has gone to a good cause.

Scavenge the Parts

In many cases, old cars still have working parts with a lot of life left in them. Take an inventory of your vehicle and see what parts can be salvaged and reused. You may even be able to transfer them to one of your other vehicles. Or you may want to recycle them in more creative ways, such as turning an old tire into a tire swing for the kids.

If you can’t use the parts yourself, you can sell them online or to a scrap yard. Selling the parts individually often gets you more money than selling the whole car as scrap. Advertise on Craigslist, eBay, and other websites to reach the widest audience possible. Although it takes more time and know-how than other options, it also has the most potential for profit.

Sell It to a Scrap Yard

Finally, if your car doesn’t run or if you simply don’t want to spend the time selling the car piece by piece, scrap yards are always willing to pay cash for cars in Florida. They generally pay more for your used car than a car dealership, because they can break it down and make a profit off the parts. Even if the rest of your car doesn’t work, they can get money for the scrap metal. Selling your junk car to a scrap yard is an easy process, and you can get paid that day. It’s easiest if you have the vehicle’s title, but it’s usually possible to sell your junk car even if you’ve lost the title along the way.
