Living with a cervical collar, especially sleeping with a cervical collar can be a tough task. Wearing any orthopedic support aid like cervical collar or knee brace can be annoying at some levels because after a while, it can get rather uncomfortable for the patient. Once the pain/injury begins to show sign of improvement and the pain subsides, the orthopedic aids can seem a bit restrictive. However, physicians do advice in favor of the use of aids because these restrict the movement and the compression element aids the pain. Cervical collar comes in two main types, Soft cervical collar and hard cervical collar. The soft cervical collar can be used in case of mild pain or post a non-serious injury to provide compression and restrict uninhibited movement of the neck. The hard cervical collar is more restrictive, made from rigid material, the hard cervical collar is used post injury/surgery or if the patient is suffering from a severe neck problem. Most of the patients ask questions pertaining to use of cervical collar like if the cervical collar should be worn while sleeping or now, for how long should a cervical collar be worn post a problem to the neck/spine, can patients remove cervical collar to avoid immobilization…well, the list is long, there are just too many questions that need to be answered. Sleeping with a cervical collar, though, is something that bothers everyone. Here is a guide to sleeping with a cervical collar. Sleeping With a Cervical Collar It is important to wear the cervical collar while sleeping, as when you are sleeping, the risk of excessive moment is on a high which could worsen your neck condition. Cervical collar especially the soft cervical collar allows the muscles of the neck to rest by limiting motion of the neck and also promotes healing. Prolonged use of cervical collar can cause stiffness in the neck and spine; this can cause immobilization of the neck in the long run and make you dependent on the use of cervical collar. However, it is extremely important to prevent excessive movement of the neck, in flexion and extension, thus protecting it from re-injury. When you sleep with a cervical collar, there are certain things that you should keep in mind, like: 1. Do not sleep on the side and do not sleep on your stomach. It is best to sleep on your back, with a pillow under your shoulder to align the neck and upper back. 2. If you are wearing cervical collar post a serious injury, seek assistance from any family member/nurse to get out of the bed. The shoulder should remain aligned with the neck. 3. Do not sleep without a cervical collar unless your doctor advises for it. 4. If you want to remove the cervical collar for a short while, seek assistance from a family member/nurse. 5. If you feel uncomfortable sleeping on the bed with a cervical collar on, try sleeping in a recliner chair. A reclining chair at 45 degrees will allow less weight to fall on the neck. 6. Ask your doctor for specific cervical collar that is best suited for your neck problem/injury.
