Good Tooth Habits Start in Childhood

Health

When it comes to taking care of a smile, it is important for people to get started early. Preventing tooth decay starts with good habits formed in childhood. That is why it is important for parents to make sure that their children follow advice from a kids' dentist in Lone Tree, CO, about how children can ensure that they will have their real teeth for most of their lives. Of course, it helps if the parents can make it more fun.

Avoiding Sweets

Children are going to eat sugar; it is just a fact. However, if they are going to eat sugar, there should be rules about doing so, or at least guidelines. On holidays like Halloween, parents will often try to ration the candy over the course of a couple of weeks. For good tooth health, it is better to let the children eat it all at once. Only so much acid can develop in the mouth at once, and parents can be on hand to make sure that teeth get brushed in a timely manner. Once the candy is gone, the children won't nag anymore, and smart parents will set the parameters so there are no sweets for a couple of weeks after the holiday. Of course, it helps set a good example if parents limit their own intake of sweets.

Brushing Twice a Day

Children should brush their teeth twice a dayonce in the morning and once at night. If the kids see their parents doing it, they will follow suit. It is important to model the behaviors that you want your children to have. By sharing tooth-brushing time, parents can show that they care about oral hygiene. They could also find that it becomes a nice way to bond with their children as it carves a little bit of time out of a busy schedule to be together. Children should brush their teeth for 2 minutes every time. There are some videos on the Internet that help children know when 2 minutes is up.

Dental Floss

Sometimes, dental floss is a big joke. The dentist asks if you floss regularly, and the patient wonders if "never" is regular or not. However, flossing is an important way to fight plaque and tartar build up, and flossing can make trips to the dentist so much easier. Getting your child to floss will have benefits not just in the here and now but in the future by changing how the child might see the dentist and visits to get his or her teeth cleaned. An easy cleaning with no cavities is the surest way to help a child grow into an adult who doesn't fear the dentist and takes good care of his or her teeth.

Visiting the Dentist

Going to a kids' dentist in Lone Tree, CO, can help make the visit to the dentist not as frightening as visiting a DDS who caters to adults. Dentists who cater to children often have video games and toys that appeal to children of all ages. They will also usually have a gift to give the child afterwards. While these things help the child feel good about going to get his or her teeth cleaned, what the child won't realize is that those who work in a dentist office that caters to children are extra gentle on the teeth and in the mouth. These dentists know that a bad experience now could lead to an adult that avoids going to have any work done on their teeth, even if it is preventative. Visiting the dentist once every 6 months helps keep cavities and more drastic mouth problems at bay.
