Setting Safety Rules Around the Pool

Family & Parenting

Setting rules for safety by any pool in Ft. Myers is important and can be helpful. Many accidents or bad situations can happen around the swimming area and it is vital to set up some ground rules, especially if there are children or families swimming up a storm.

Rules for Kids

Owning a pool and having a great time with your family and friends in your backyard can become a fun tradition, especially during the very warm months. You can invite the neighborhood over to splash in your pool and have parties and bashes of all kinds around the water. If your pool is going to be used constantly, it is imperative that you set some strict rules for using the pool and even around your backyard. You can set rules and go over each rule in detail with those that come over and want to use it. Even if it is with your own family and children, you should establish boundaries to keep everyone that is invited safe and happy.

First, you can determine the rules you want to set and what is important to you. Let all of the kids know that there should be no rough-housing in the water. Kids can easily get hurt, and even possibly drown, in a matter of minutes. Jumping on top of another, pushing, jumping, and even trying out rough tricks can mean danger. Stress the importance of playing calmly in the water while also having fun at the same time. Let kids know that running around the perimeter of the pool spells danger. This is where slips and falls can take place and broken bones and head injuries can appear. Enforce the walking and not running rule. Even if the ground is dry, anyone can slip at any time. Kids should also be with a parent or responsible adult, especially if they are not great swimmers. Floaties should also be used to help swim, not as a device to help save anyone that is struggling to stay above the water.

Adults by the Pool

Even adults can get into some danger while lounging by the pool area. Talk to the adults about watching children if they are really supposed to be. Talking with others, listening to music, or even on a cell phone can be very distracting and can cause issues. Everyone needs to pay attention while enjoying time in the warm sun. Make sure everyone exits the pool when the weather turns sour. Rain, thunderstorms, and lightning can cause a lot of harm and danger. Even if your guests were looking forward to swimming and a storm appears, have everyone get out. It's not worth the risk. If alcohol will be served around the pool, its best to make sure your guests or family drink very responsibly. This will decrease the chance of an accident taking place. If a powerful wind storm takes place, move everyone inside and ensure that patio furniture or anything that could move around is tied down or covered.

Sun Goes Down

Some of the most fun times to swim in a pool in Ft. Myers are when the sun dips down and the dusk appears. It can also be dangerous. Ensure that everyone is cautious of each other and that your pool is sufficiently lit up with bright lights. You will be able to see while you swim and it will give you a pretty clear view in front and around you. Never let guests swim alone. If there is an emergency, no one will be able to hear the person needing help and this could turn into a horrid and sad situation.
