4 Ways to Make Your Basement More Habitable

Home Improvement

Your basement doesn't need to be a creepy place that's too dreary and cold to be any fun for anyone to hang out in. Even if your basement is unfinished, that's valuable square footage that you should be taking advantage of. If you're worried that nothing you do could make your basement habitable, this article can help you with 4 things you can do to make the lowest point in your house one of the coziest. When you need to re-paint or get a professional to help you with your foundation repair in Glencoe, MN, these steps help make your end goal a reality.

Paint a Cheerful Color

There are several roles that wall color play in the look of a room. For one thing, the color of the walls and flooring tie a theme together. For another, colors make up for flaws in the space of the room itself. If a room is too dark, a lighter color will make it look less dreary. Sunny rooms can be painted green or blue to make them feel cooler; and if you want to downplay a high ceiling, you can paint a room darker to make it appear cozier. For basements, light, warm colors will open up the space and make it seem more cheerful. Make sure to take several different types of paint chips home, so you can get a color and brand that will look good in your home's specific environment.

Get the Right Flooring

Basements are famous for being cold, hard, and damp. Of course, if you want to use your basement for storage, it won't be such an issue for the space to not be inviting, but if you want to use the area to host guests and do activities, this is not ideal. There are several types of flooring that will always feel cold and damp, no matter if your basement is heated in the autumn and winter. Most types of wood, concrete, and tile will feel cold when you get up in the morning. If you love the look of these flooring types, you can always get coils that go underneath them, which will heat when you flip a switch or set a timer. Otherwise, you might want to stick to carpet that will be comfortable to walk on and will absorb heat more readily than other materials.

Manage the Temperature and Humidity

Basements are far more pleasant when they are not cold and damp. Besides choosing colors and flooring that will encourage heat absorption, you will also want to make sure that the space is being heated to a degree that will also make people want to spend time downstairs. Basements are naturally colder and can be nice in the depths of the summer heat. You will want to make sure that your radiator or furnace is programmed to match the temperature disparity between the upper part of your house and the basement.

Repair Unevenness

If your basement slopes in one direction or is prone to getting flooded, you will want to get your foundation and supporting walls looked at immediately. You won't feel comfortable putting in nice furniture or other homey elements until you can trust that they won't get ruined by flood water or mud. Contractors that specialize in foundation repair in Glencoe, MN, can help you get your basement to the level that will ensure that you always feel safe putting in hutches or electronic equipment, so that you can get the most out of all of your home's square footage. With these techniques, your basement can be one of your favorite parts of your home.
