With a new year comes countless resolutions that won't even see the month of February. But while you're making your own list, why not add saving money? By keeping your HVAC system running efficiently, you'll save money each and every month on your energy bill, and in turn your home will use less energy overall. You can feel good about saving some cash while doing good for Mother Earth at the same time. Who can say no to that? Here's how to start getting your HVAC in St. Paul running like it's brand new. Professional Inspection Even if you think everything is running smoothly and you haven't noticed any major problems, a professional HVAC inspection each year will definitely be worth the fee. A professional can catch small issues before they turn into larger ones and will also check for safety. Professionals are trained to know exactly what to look for and have all of the tools necessary to test your system and make sure it is running efficiently. In addition to an annual inspection, don't avoid calling a professional for other small issues that come up. If you're not absolutely sure of what you're doing, you could end up doing more harm than good by trying to fix a problem yourself. You also shouldn't ignore warning signs, such as unusual noises. Small problems most likely won't heal themselves and if you wait too long, can turn into bigger problems or greatly affect the life of the system. Do yourself a favor by taking care of any issues that come up as soon as they occur. Routine Maintenance Your HVAC system may be out of the way in your home to the point of where you don't really think about it until something is wrong. But if you give it a little TLC every now and again, you will reap the benefits and avoid breakdowns that always seem to happen at the worst times. Once simple way to keep your HVAC efficient is to change the filter about every month. Think of it like changing the oil in your car, yet even simpler. Your car is more likely to run better and last longer if it is cared for often, and your HVAC is very similar. Air filters are very inexpensive and simple to change; it's just a matter of remembering. If you think you might forget, set a reminder on your phone to go off once a month or do it at the same time you do other monthly chores, like organizing your pantry or cleaning the baseboards. Keep Air Vents Clear Even though they might not fit in with the rest of your decor, air vents aren't something you can cover up and still expect them to work the same. In order for your HVAC to be efficient, air must be able to flow out and back in without any obstacles blocking the air flow. They shouldn't be covered up with furniture or wall hangings, as this can also be a safety hazard in addition to your home not being heated or cooled properly. Don't Heat or Cool the Outside Another way to keep your HVAC in St. Paul running at its best is to ensure it only runs when it needs to maintain the temperature on the inside of your home. Keep windows and doors closed whenever your system is on to keep the air where it's supposed to be. Open your curtains and use the sun to your advantage in the winter, but utilize window coverings when trying to keep your home cool in the summer.
