With public education deteriorating and most schools sitting on the brink of complete destruction, can anyone really be surprised when a child complains about not liking school? All too often, parents think that children are lazy and that is why they complain about going to school. Just where exactly this train of thought comes from is a bit of a mystery. As any child development expert will tell you, children are anything but lazy! Children are programmed to learn and they are programmed to be curious. If your child is complaining about school, chances are there is something wrong with it. Here are a few signs that indicate it might be time to look at private high schools in North Shore. Anti-Social Behavior Children are naturally very playful and social. If your once fun and bubbly son or daughter has suddenly turned inward and is having trouble socializing with people in a wide range of ages or walks of life, something has gone wrong with their socialization. While many people want to blame the "moody teens" for drastic changes in social behavior, there is a rising school of thought that considers a school's role in these difficult years. Think about it! Your children spend 6 to 8 hours a day with no one but kids their own age and most of the day, they get in trouble for talking to them! It's no wonder teens become anti-social! Schools want them that way! Consistent and/or Severe Fatigue Another symptom that there may be something wrong with your child's current school is if he or she always comes home "tired." Whether the "tired" they complain of is physical, emotional, or mental, it hardly matters. If a child is in a good school, they should come home energized and excited to tell you about what they discovered that day. Learning should invigorate and challenge; it shouldn't drain. Increased Sadness or Distress Sending your child away for the duration of the day is hard on many parents. If that same child you've entrusted to someone else comes home complaining of not being treated fairly or is constantly involved in some kind of struggle or conflict, chances are the school isn't disciplining their students correctly. Children will make mistakes, they will test boundaries, and they will have conflicts with their peers. The manner in which teachers respond to these natural growing pains will have a large part to play in the development or destruction of self-esteem. If your child seems sad or angry, don't be tempted to blame it on the teenage years--find out more about how they are being disciplined. Aversion to Homework A key indicator of happiness at school is how your child feels about homework. Wanting a short break from the daily grind is understandable--adults like it too. If, however, your child fights you tooth and nail over doing their homework, don't think it's your child just being lazy. All too often teachers send home assignments that are useless to their students. If you see a lot of worksheets, rote memorization, or anything else that just looks like busy work, it may be time to set up a conference. In a good school, homework is an invitation to continue the day's explorations and should be met with enthusiasm and/or determination to better understand difficult concepts that were presented that day. Start a Conversation Of course, the best way to determine whether your child is in a good school is to ask them. If parents are allowed to express themselves, they usually take advantage of it. During this conversation, however, be sure to validate what they're saying instead of brushing it off as childish or unimportant. If you're considering transferring your child to one of the private high schools in North Shore, having them on board will make all the difference in the world!
