How to Keep Your Storage Units Organized

Business

If you are someone who cringes at the thought of going in your basement or even opening a closet door, you may not have enough storage space in your home. With changing seasons and family additions, the longer you stay in one place, the more your stuff starts to pile up around you. You could purge some things, but for the things that you definitely need or have too much sentimental value to you, you might want to consider getting a storage unit. But if your limited storage space in your home is disorganized, how can you keep your storage units in Crystal, MN, orderly? Here are a few tips to keeping it clean in storage units.

Clean Beforehand

If you rent a storage unit, it is likely completely empty, but that doesn't mean that it is completely clean. Taking just a few moments to thoroughly clean out a storage unit can do wonders for keeping it clean in the future. If you load your belongings into a space that has cobwebs hanging everywhere and soot on the ground, then you probably won't feel as motivated to keep the space at a high level of cleanliness. Make sure that you sweep the floor and the walls to get rid of any residue or any bugs that may be making a home in the unit. Inside units are typically cleaner, but outside units may take a very small amount of time to sweep out the dead bugs and dirt. Then you have a clean canvas to work with.

Label Everything

Label everything; even the tiniest, smallest little item should have a label. In fact, the smallest things are many times the hardest to find. Place a contents list on the side of each box. If you will be coming in and out of the unit to bring things back and forth, then you should consider writing on a laminated sheet with overhead pens what the contents of the box are. This way you will be able to change the list often without having to cross out and re-write on boxes.

The most important part of this is consistency. It can be inconvenient to stop and write down everything that you take or leave each time you visit the unit, especially if you are in a hurry, but it will be worth it. You will be able to find everything you need in an orderly fashion and always know what you have at home and what you have in the unit. Another good idea would be to keep a list on your phone or computer listing what things you have in each place. This way, nothing gets lost.

Make a Map

Along with labeling everything, you should also have a rough map. Divide your storage unit into halves or fourths if it is big enough and organize boxes and furniture by category. Put clothes on the left and old schoolwork on the right. Or divide it into rooms in your home if you have a lot of furniture. Whatever makes sense in your head, use these divisions and post a map on the wall of the categories and where you will be able to find things. This will require a bit of work when you are moving your belongings in and you might spend a couple more hours organizing on the day of move-in than you would like to. However, this process makes long-term storage a breeze and instead of dreading a trip to your storage units in Crystal, MN, you might not even give it a second thought, which is how it should be.
