What Essentials to Pack for a Major Bike Adventure

Sports

If you love the outdoors and cycling and want to bike the Appalachian Trail, there are many things that are essential to take along with you to make your journey wonderful and safe. If this is going to be be your first big ride, you should be prepared and pack the items that you will need in any situation.

Pack the Essentials

There are probably many things that you feel like you should tote with you while you bike on a long and winding trail. In reality, you won’t have the strength or the room to load up your home and strap it on your back, so think long and hard about all of the essentials that you will definitely need to have with you. Water is very important. This will keep you hydrated when it is hot and will nourish you when you are thirsty from riding. Going without water can be extremely dangerous for your health and even for your mind.

A couple pairs of padded shorts and gloves will save your skin from bruising and chaffing. Throw in a bottle of cream or gel that will help to prevent, and even heal, any skin conditions that pop up from long days of riding. If you are uncomfortable riding in your seat, chances are you will want to ride yourself right home.

Besides feeling comfortable in your clothes, you should also feel comfy in your skin. Bring plenty of sunblock to protect your skin from the sun and even the wind. This includes chapstick for your tender lips. Any type of sun or windburn can be super painful and can put a huge damper on your days of riding. Pack clothing items that can be used for all types of weather as Mother Nature can quickly throw a curve ball your way and, if you are not prepared, it will be a difficult time to ride if you are freezing cold or heated up.

The Modern World

Even though you are riding out in the wilderness and through mountain ranges, you still need to be prepared with items that can rescue you in case of an emergency. A cell phone and charger will allow you to contact someone, or emergency services, if needed. There's always the possibility of getting lost or hurt. Cash is also something that can free you from a major pickle that you get stuck in. Don't forget about credit cards and even checks. While most places accept cash, not all accept checks or credit cards, so bring a little of all of them just in case. Be sure to have everything and anything that will help you to repair your bike or your tires. You never know when something will suddenly break, pop, or become loose on the trail. If you don't come with items to repair things, this can quickly set you back or even end your journey quick. You want to be ready for any situation that lies ahead.

Stay Very Nourished

To keep yourself fueled and going, you need to nourish and energize yourself with food, particularly proteins and carbohydrates. Be sure to have plenty of snacks and bars. There are so many wonderful options that you can buy and throw into your sack of goodies. These will allow you to quickly eat a snack or even a meal with one hand. There are also many gels that are fueled to give you a boost that you need on any path. Simply tear open the pouch and guzzle down a tasty and nutritious supplement that will propel you forward when you bike the Appalachian Trail.
