6 Things to Do Near DC

Art and Culture

Washington, DC, is more than just our nation’s capital. It houses some of the most historical monuments in the world. With beautiful streets lined with buildings and memorials, it is one city that everyone should visit. If you are planning a trip, you might be overwhelmed with the number of things to see while in the area. From historical museums to beautiful monuments, there are plenty of things to do near DC. Here are six of the many things that should be on your list:

  1. The Smithsonian Institution. With over 15 individual museums included in this institution, there is plenty to see and do for everyone. There are options including the Air and Space Museum, Museum of Art, National Portrait Gallery, and plenty more! All of these exhibits are free to the public and open daily. However, most of the museums tend to close relatively early. Be sure to check the schedules for more details.
  2. The Holocaust Museum. This museum is close to the Smithsonian and the Washington Monument, making it an ideal stop for those looking to see a few things in a close area. The museum holds artifacts and memorabilia from what was one of the most terrifying acts of genocide in history. By stepping inside, you will travel back in time and learn more about the historical events that lead to this horrific event taking place. After your visit, you will understand why it is so important that these terrible atrocities never happen again.
  3. The White House. An iconic landmark in US history, this building contains rooms such as the Oval Office. Housing the president and his family, as well as beautifully decorated rooms and well-manicured gardens, it’s no wonder that this is on the bucket list for many people when visiting the DC area. However, in order to take a tour, you must contact your state senator’s office. They will be able to issue passes and arrange tours for you and your party.
  4. National Zoo. Located on more than 15 acres, this zoological park sits right in the center of the sprawling DC metropolis. Considered part of the Smithsonian, it is an excellent place to visit. Free to the public, this beautiful zoo has over 1,500 animals within its gates. With apes, elephants, reptiles, and bears on display, you and your family will get an up-close view of animals and their habits. If you happen to be in the area during the November and December months, be sure to pay a visit to the zoo after dark. With a train, lights, and laser shows, the zoo lights after dark are something that shouldn’t be missed!
  5. International Spy Museum. Are you a fan of all things espionage? If you are, then you don’t want to miss this museum! With plenty of interactive exhibits, you will learn all about the world of spies.
  6. Vietnam Veterans Memorial. One of the most powerful memorials in the world, this exhibit pays homage to all of the soldiers killed in the war. With over 58,000 names of those who have fallen etched on polished granite, it’s hallowed ground. While there, pay close attention to the mementos that have been left by the family members of the deceased. Notes, letters, medals, and other belongings will move you and renew your sense of patriotism.

While these 6 places should be at the top of your list, there are plenty of other locations to visit while in the DC area. From the Washington Monument to the Lincoln Memorial, there are endless options of things to do near DC. Don’t make Washington a day trip. Instead, spend a few days soaking in the sights and sounds of our nation’s capital!
