Cleaning Up Following a Flood

Home Improvement

If you’re dealing with catastrophic flood damage in Atlanta, chances are you are feeling overwhelmed. Floods can happen at any time and are often unexpected. If you’ve been taken off guard, don’t worry. It’s normal. However, it is important to act quickly. Because flood water can contain contaminants and bacteria, it can cause serious damage to the structure of your home if not taken care of immediately. If you are dealing with rising waters, here is a quick guide to help you jump into action.

  1. Contact your insurance company. Hopefully, your insurance covers flood damage. When calling to speak with your agent, he should be able to tell you exactly what your policy covers and what it doesn’t. Once you have opened a claim with your insurance company, an adjuster should contact you. Then, it’s important to inventory the damage. Take pictures and video as well as make a list of the items destroyed as you begin to clean. This will come in handy once you have to fill out the records for your insurance claims and tax deductions.
  2. Get the water out. If you have more than just a few feet of water in your home, it’s important to limit the amount of water you remove each day. While this might sound counter-intuitive, if you remove more than 2-3 feet of water in a day, it could cause the foundation of the home to crack. The pressure outside of the walls might end up exceeding the pressure on the inside of the walls, which can result in the collapse of flooring and walls. If you are nervous about pumping out the water on your own, call in a professional.
  3. Shovel out the mud. Get as much of the mud and sludge out on your own. Using shovels and wheel barrows, remove the contaminated filth. Then, use water or a hose to get mud off of the surfaces in your home.
  4. Disinfect everything. Once the water and the dirt are cleaned out, it’s time for the hardest part; cleaning off everything in your home. You will need to clean dishes and utensils with boiling water or bleach. The cupboards and counters will also need to be wiped down with a bleach solution as well. Clothing, bedding, and curtains will need to be removed, placed outside, and washed as soon as possible. Try to use a dehumidifier to help the carpets dry faster and then have them cleaned professionally. Furniture, because it can easily soak up contaminants and bacteria, will need to be cleaned by a professional.
  5. Clean the ceilings and walls. Depending on the extent of the damage, you may need to remove the wallboard. If you don’t, mold and bacteria can grow. In some cases, if the damage to the walls is minor, a hole can be cut in the wall as a way to ventilate the wall both inside and out. They will then be able to dry without the risk of harmful things growing
  6. Call in a professional. Cleaning up after a flood is no small task. There is so much cleaning to do. Dealing with the loss of possessions can be stressful enough. Instead of having to deal with the burden of cleaning on top of the loss, call in a professional company. They will know exactly how to clean and treat all of your belongings while also treating the damaged structure of your home.

Floods are terrifying. Cleanup, however, doesn’t need to be. If you are dealing with flood damage in Atlanta, call a cleanup company and begin the decontamination process immediately. Don’t let the aftermath of a natural disaster destroy your life. By dealing with things quickly, you’ll be well on your way to getting your home back.
