It’s amazing—we all love sleep and talk about how much our beds and pillows mean to us, how lovely it is to sleep in on a rainy morning, and just how refreshed we feel after a good night’s sleep. But the truth is that many of us don’t get enough sleep at all. Work, family, worries about the day—these all add up to minutes, if not hours, taken away from that perfect mattress and those soft, comfy sheets. In addition, your body’s immune system runs more efficiently when you get the proper rest at night. Even something as simple as a flu shot works better when you get plenty of sleep.

Sleep Makes You Happier

Sleep may not make you take to the Austrian hills singing about the sound of music, but getting plenty of sleep helps your brain regulate your emotions so you can function with a more even tone. Everyone knows that kids get cranky when they don’t get enough sleep, and grown-ups are the same way. Getting enough sleep also helps reduce stress levels and keeps you cool-headed when things get cooking. So lighten up by getting those lights out for long enough each night to keep you from being a grouch.

If you’re trying to control your weight, sleep is essential to your success. Not getting enough sleep has been shown to lead to weight gain for both behavioral and hormonal reasons. When you’re tired, you’re simply hungrier, and your diet resolution goes right out the window along with all the other benefits of getting enough sleep.

Intimacy Issues

Has some of the spark gone out of your relationship with your partner? Too little sleep may be the reason! Couples who are exhausted from the day’s work and prior sleep deprivation find it more difficult to maintain the level of intimacy they usually enjoy, and some studies have indicated that a lack of sleep may lead to lower testosterone levels in men.

The next time you feel yourself longing for the comfort of your bed but don’t have the time available to spend there, consider reorganizing and reprioritizing your life. Sleep shouldn’t be an afterthought; it’s as important to your health as eating right and exercise.
