Wellness is an interesting concept that generally means “health,” or the proper balance between health in the mind, body, and spirit. But, with such a wide range of ideas contained in the idea of wellness, it’s confusing to know what exactly is meant by the word “wellness.” According to many websites, including UC Davis’s website, there are many different facets to the idea of wellness including emotional wellness, occupational wellness, physical wellness, environmental wellness, intellectual wellness, social wellness, financial wellness, and spiritual wellness. Many of these are overlooked when thinking about general wellness, but one segment of wellness is more important than the others: emotional wellness. Here are a few tips for achieving emotional wellness in Kansas City, just in time for the start of a new year. Take Time for Yourself One of the most important things to do every day is to take time for yourself. It’s important to relax and de-stress from the cares of the day. If you aren’t able to take too much time for yourself, set aside at least ten minutes a day where you can sit and be in complete silence. You can practice meditation, or just try and clear your mind of all your thoughts and worries. This practice helps you to detoxify your mind and clear your palate of the worries of the day and start fresh once again. An easy way to remember this is to get to bed ten minutes early and use that time to de-stress before you sleep. Not only will this refresh your mind for the day, but it will also improve your sleep! Realistic Goals and Expectations A large problem with today’s smartphone society is the need to do everything all at once. Because everything is so easy to access nowadays, and there are so many things that you could be doing (i.e., Buzzfeed), it’s hard to balance what you could be doing with what you should be doing. One of the most important aspects to emotional wellness is to set realistic goals and expectations of yourself and of others. Don’t expect yourself to do every little thing on your to-do list of a million things, and don’t always expect people to act the way they don’t. You may want to come home to a wonderfully clean home with a 3-course meal, but if that’s never happened before, don’t get your hopes up. If you continually get your hopes up and set unrealistic expectations for yourself and others, you aren’t accommodating reality and will set yourself, and others, up for failure. Positivity Lastly, keep a positive attitude. This is one of the most important aspects to having wonderful emotional wellness. By always staying positive, you can beat out a lot of bad moods and from feeling poorly about a situation. A great practice to employ now is gratitude. A lot of people think about gratitude as being a passive practice, rather than an active practice as it should be. By thinking about the things you are grateful for every day, you are able to become a happier and more positive person. Positivity, optimism, and gratitude are all interrelated, and are all important to the practice of maintaining good emotional wellness. Though there are many aspects to the idea of wellness in Kansas City, by practicing these three tips for emotional wellness, you can improve your overall wellness and encourage and help yourself to becoming a better-rounded and happier person. Becoming more in touch with your emotional side by practicing positivity, setting realistic goals, and by taking time for yourself, you can become a more successful, happier, and positive person.
