How to Make a Home Look Larger without Remodeling

Home Improvement

If you have limited space in your home, you likely struggle with keeping your rooms from feeling cramped and cluttered. Even when your home is neat and organized, it can feel like the walls are closing in on you, simply because the space around you is too small. So what can you do to make a room feel more spacious without knocking out walls and doing serious remodeling? Luckily, there are a few simple tricks that can do just this by utilizing home interior design in Dallas.

Lighter Paint

Are there rooms in your house that have dark colors on the walls? Whether it's a deep red or navy blue, such dark colors can make a room feel smaller. It's a trick that our eyes play on us, telling us that a dark space must naturally be small and cramped. If you switch out that dark paint for something lighter, it tricks your brain into thinking that you're standing in a wider, more open space. It doesn't matter what the exact color is, as long as it's light, it will make your room feel more open.

Better Lighting

Insufficient lighting in a room can make it feel small in addition to making it feel gloomy. If you have a room in your house that feels especially small, try getting some more light in the room. This may be as simple as opening up the blinds or getting sheer curtains instead of heavy drapes.

If the issue is not with the natural lighting, then try adding some better artificial lighting. Change out the light bulbs in the room's existing lights for a higher wattage. If necessary, add some lamps and other lighting fixtures to spread light to all corners of the room. This will make it feel more open and spacious.

Visually Smaller Furniture

This might sound a little strange at first, but the actual size of your furniture and the visual size of your furniture are actually quite different. Here's an example: There are two coffee tables in a store. The first is a very solid piece that sits on a thick base that has storage drawers and cabinets. Essentially, it is a large, rectangular box that is about 4 feet long and 2 feet wide. The second coffee table is also 4 feet long and 2 feet wide. However, it has a glass top and four simple wooden legs. There is a storage shelf on the bottom of this one, but you can see straight through the coffee table from one side to the other.

Now, which one do you think would look larger? Naturally, the coffee table that your eye can't pass through will seem to carry more visual weight than the glass-topped table that allows you to see through it and around it. Having visually "smaller" furniture like this allows you to get furniture that is of the appropriate size for your needs, but that appears to be smaller. This will help your room to look less crowded.

Professional Help

If you're just at a complete loss as to how to open up your small, cramped rooms, then you should find someone who specializes in home interior design. They will know about all of the little tricks for making a small space feel more open, as well as being able to help you organize that small space to use it as efficiently as possible.

Living in a home that feels small and cramped can cause feelings of stress and anxiety, so you shouldn't deal with it any longer than is absolutely necessary. Speak to a professional in home interior design in Dallas today to see how they can help you.
