Becoming a Montessori Parent at Home

Education

As a parent, you are concerned about the way your children learn, act, and play. For that reason, it’s important to understand how Montessori in Anaheim can help. While enrolling your children in Montessori curriculum, you are giving your child the opportunity to thrive in a supportive environment. However, there is more that you can do. By adapting Montessori skills outside of the classroom, you can help your child to thrive at home as well. These skills revolve around respecting your child and allowing them to learn at their own speed. Here are a few tips to help you get started:

  1. Respect your child. While it might be difficult to do, it’s important to respect your child’s feelings and actions in every aspect of their life. If they are crying, put yourself in their shoes. As adults, we allow ourselves to have bad days. If we wake up on the wrong side of the bed, it’s okay. However, it’s important to give your child that same freedom and to respect it when they do. Instead of losing your patience, give them extra hugs and love. Respect that they don’t always want to eat when you do. Respect the times that they don’t want to be confined to indoors. Respect that they have needs and when those needs aren’t met, they may become frustrated.  Respect their needs and watch this courtesy be extended from your children down to their friends and other children.
  2. Let them move. Children need to be able to explore and try new things. Allow them safe spaces to explore. Don’t try to confine them to one area. In addition, provide new adventures and activities for them to try. This will encourage them to think outside of the box and be creative.
  3. Give them choices. If you find yourself in a power struggle with your 3-year-old, try giving them two choices. Don’t give them more than two. Then, respect their choice. This will allow them to have confidence in their ability to make choices. It will also help to resolve problems easier.
  4. Communicate clearly. Teach your children new worlds by introducing them to new objects around them. Be sure to talk to them clearly. Be respectful and courteous in your dealings with them. Your conversations with your child should involve more than just telling them what they should and should not be doing. Foster communication by asking them about their day and getting to know them better.
  5. Don’t correct them, show them. If your child makes a mistake, don’t tell them or judge them in what they did wrong. Instead, show them how to do it correctly. Instead of making the error a big deal, simply show them a different way of doing it.
  6. Exercise patience. While it might be difficult, the more consistent you can be now the more it will benefit them in the long run. You may be tempted to give in to tantrums or revert back to previous behavior in an effort to get some peace and quiet. Take the time to teach your child and work through issues thoroughly. While it might take a while, eventually your child will begin to understand.
  7. Love them unconditionally. No matter how bad of a day it is, make sure that your child knows how much that you love them. If you have a hard time, don’t get too down on yourself. Instead, simply try harder the next day.

The Montessori Method allows children to learn in a supportive and thoughtfully prepared environment. By becoming a parent who uses Montessori in Anaheim style of parenting, you will find your child more independent, confident, and happy.
