Surprising Energy Conservation Tips

Home Improvement

You've likely heard a lot about conserving energy during your lifetime, so you already know the importance of turning off lights when you leave a room, and not leaving other electronics running when they're not being used. These are fairly obvious ways to conserve energy, but here are a few tips for energy conservation in Rocklin that you may have not heard of before.

Unplug

You likely charge your phone during the night, then unplug it from the charger and go throughout your day, leaving the charger plugged into the wall. After all, if the charger isn't actually charging anything, then it's not using up any electricity, right? Actually, that's absolutely false. Your phone charger continues to draw energy from the wall socket, even when it's not transferring energy into your cell phone's battery. Obviously, this is a complete waste of electricity.

If you want to cut down on your electric bill and conserve energy, then unplug your charger any time you unplug your phone, then plug it back into the outlet when you need to charge it again. It only takes a second to unplug and plug the charger back in, but the energy savings can add up over time--especially if you have multiple cell phone owners in the house (which you likely do).

It may also be a good idea to unplug other electricity-consuming items when they're not in use. Obviously, you don't want to unplug your television or computer every time you shut it off, but here are some items that you may want to consider unplugging:

  • Lamps
  • Candle or wax warmers
  • Exercise equipment
  • Stereos or iPod docks
  • Sewing machines

Remembering to unplug these items when you're not using them will help you save money while also helping the environment.

Away from Home

If you're going on vacation and your house will be empty for some time, there are several things you should do in order to keep your home from consuming unnecessary energy. The first is something you've likely already heard: Turn down your heater or turn up your air conditioner, depending on the season, so that your house isn't staying at a comfortable temperature for no one to enjoy.

You may also want to step up your "unplugging game" when going out of town, and unplug electronics like televisions and computers if you'll be away for some time. Not only does this save you more energy while you're gone, but if your home experiences a power surge while you're away, it's less likely that there will be an electrical fire in your home during your absence.

Use a Power Strip

Rather than plugging your lamps and electronics directly into the wall, plug them into a power strip, even if you don't need to. Then, when none of the items plugged into the power strip are being used, you can switch the strip off, cutting off energy to all of the items plugged into it. This is easier than unplugging every item when it's not being used, and it still helps you conserve energy.

Appliance Care

Your kitchen appliances use a lot of electricity, but obviously, you don't want to have to plug your oven in every time you need to use it. So here are a few quick tips to help you save energy with your appliances:

  • Don't warm up leftovers in your oven. Use a microwave or toaster oven instead, because they use less electricity.
  • Check for cold air leaking around the closed refrigerator door. If you feel any, repair the door seals.
  • Keep your refrigerator coils clean and free of dust for more efficient energy usage.
  • Don't open the oven door to check on your food as it cooks. Every time you open it, the oven can drop by 25 degrees, and it uses energy to get back up to the right temperature.

If you follow these tips for energy conservation in Rocklin, you should see a big decrease in your utility bills.
