Plot / Story There is a lot of hype surrounding Attack on Titan. Lots of people praise it for being a spectacular anime. On a lot of levels it is, there is plenty of action, suspense, and drama. The animation is pretty good, which always is a plus, and the characters aren't too bad. The only real problem I have with the anime is the way they did the story. It's completely clouded in mystery, you learn things that don't make sense because you don't know what happened before that happened. It's like learning steps 1 and 3, but not knowing how 2 went. Sure, you figure out what 3 is all about, but you don't know the whole story until you learn about 2. This may just be me, but it's a little annoying having a book full of questions that aren't getting answered, but anyway, let's talk about the plot of the anime. This series takes place 100 years after the mysterious appearance of humanoid beings known as "Titans." These creatures know no mercy, they walk around, attack, and kill mercilessly. The humans know nothing about them, they don't know where they came from, what they want, or why they are here. In fact, the titans were so powerful that they drove mankind to the brink of extinction. The funny thing about man is, in the face of death, we like to come together, or at least that's how the story goes. Humanity came together to build towering walls, walls that the titans could never hope to break through. This is where humanity lived for these 100 years. In walls. Trapped. At the beginning of the series, we learn just why this was never the solution. The people inside of the walls forgot what lies outside, the comfort of safety made them numb to the real dangers that lied just on the other side. The first episode introduces our main three characters: Erin, Mikasa, and Armin. Erin is the kind of kid that likes to run into battle, guns blazing. Which is all well and go, except he usually goes in to get his ass kicked. He fights first, thinks later. Mikasa, Erin's kind of sort of adopted sister, is the one that always bails him out. She's the badass. She has the combat skills and the smarts to pull of some sick fight scenes, no lie. Armin is...well, it's a little harsh to call him the coward. He's the brains. He's very tactical, but useless in a fight. He actually gets quite annoying in the fight scenes. Now, in the first episode, they are all kids. Everyone is well and safe until out of no where a gigantic titan appears, peering over the wall. With a swift kick, he busts down part of the wall, allowing titans to swarm into the town. Our main three escape of course, but not before Erin gets to watch his mom get crunched on by a titan. It is after this that all three (mainly Erin) decide to join the military. The story then continues with random appearances by the gigantic titan, and his buddy, the armored titan. After destroying another wall, the main three and their fellow cadates are forced into combat early. The story mainly focuses on the aspect of survival. This is humankind trying to push back the inevitable, but when things start getting interesting is when you start to scratch the surface of what these titans really are. This is where the story gets unbelievable complicated and I get frustrated because the series keeps secrets! It makes it intriguing though. For more on the story, give it a watch, it's better to see it with your own eyes than for me to tell you. Sequels As of this very moment, there are no sequels. There is a movie, called Wings of Freedom (I think), but that's not really a sequel since it is pretty much a back story on Levi. If you don't know who Levi is, he is a complete badass. Like Mikasa is a badass, but Levi is more badass. To the point that when the two fight together Levi gets hurt because Mikasa is too slow to keep up. So yeah, badass. There is, however, a sequel that is starting THIS February. Which is pretty awesome. The story, however, appears to be controversial. There are rumors that a main character, cough Erin, may die. That's cool with me. The important thing is this come season is supposed to be more political and answer more questions, which is amazing. There is also a live action film in the works, but that is mostly a live action version of season 1, so that doesn't exactly count. Overall As a whole, eh. It's okay. I feel like the hype that my friends barked up for it just was too much, by the time a watched the entire thing (3 days, don't judge), I was more disappointed than enthused. The story was quite annoying, the action scenes were pretty amazing, but the in between moments were just dry. Some humorous moments, some drama. Bleh. The editor of this series, however, is quite amazing. Well done, sir. In my opinion, give it a go. You will probably get sucked in by the cliffhangers, but other than that it's just an okay series.
