Tips for Building Your Humble Homestead

Home Improvement

Many Texans dream of purchasing land and building their own humble homestead, complete with a rambling ranch house, a barn, and some livestock. If you're at a point in your life where you're ready to start pursuing this dream, then you have a lot to consider. This article will walk you through some of the basic steps that lead up to you having that perfect homestead.

Finding Land

First, you need to decide if you want to build your homestead from the ground up or already have a prebuilt home on the property you purchase. If you choose the latter, make a clear list of the things that you want in a home, as well as an additional list of features you want on the land. How many acres do you want? How close do you want your nearest neighbors? Do you want rolling hills or flat fields? Do you want a well on the property? What about a stream or other water feature?

All of these things apply only to the land, and your list of requirements for a home may be even longer, so it can be difficult to find a home that meets your wishes on a piece of property that is also exactly what you want. If you want to build your own home, then you can simply focus on finding the right piece of property, and you can build a home to suit you in every way imaginable. This makes the hunt a little bit easier on you.

Preparing the Land

Once you find the right piece of land, it's time to prepare it for your homestead. If you're building everything yourself, there may be a bit more land preparation required. First, you will need to look into land clearing in Houston and have any trees, boulders, and other obstructions removed from the areas where you will be putting any buildings. You may also want to have the land cleared for pastures for your horses, cows, or other livestock.

In addition to clearing the land, you may need to put in your own well, septic system, and other systems to provide your home with plumbing and electricity. If you want electricity in your barn or other outlying buildings, make sure that the proper systems are put in place for those buildings as well as your home. Depending on the slope and lay of the land, you may also need to have someone do some leveling for you. Make sure you work with a certified contractor for all of this.

Beginning to Build

After the land is prepared, you're ready to start building. You'll begin by having the foundations for any building you are planning to erect poured. This will include your home, barn, any permanent sheds, and so on. Obviously, this means you'll need to have a floor plan for your new home ready to go, so the contractors know what size and shape the foundation needs to be. You'll also want to have an idea of how big you want your outbuildings to be. Though these are usually simpler in structure, you don't want to end up with a foundation that is smaller than you wanted your barn to be.

At this stage, all you should have to do is sit back and watch the work get done. You may be called on to make some decisions regarding building materials, if you haven't done so already, but your job now is to just supervise the creating of your cozy homestead.

When the build is complete, you should be ready to start moving in and putting any final touches on your home. You should also be able to start bringing livestock onto your property. If you end up wanting more livestock and needing more pastures, you can always get more land clearing in Houston.
