Tips for Painting a Home Interior

Interior Design

Most people who are bored with an old room or are moving into a new house are going to think about repainting at some point in time. A good paint job can give the space a cleaner, fresher, and more updated look. It’s tricky to get the paint job exactly right, and for that reason, many people will choose to hire a painting company in Atlanta. However, many people prefer the Do It Yourself approach, and those people will have quite a few things to keep in mind.

Of course, if a homeowner doesn’t like the colors he picked for a room, he can always paint over them. However, it is preferable to get the right color or colors the first time around whenever possible. The two main considerations are style themes and the likes and dislikes of the homeowner. Certain room styles will lend themselves to certain colors. For instance, rustic themed rooms tend to be dominated by darker colors like browns and reds. For a room without a definite style, the homeowner should simply decide what he wants to achieve in the room and pick colors to facilitate that. If he wants to relax in the room, he may want to look at cool colors like blue and purple, but if he wants a bright, energizing space instead, he would probably prefer warm colors like yellow and red.

Of course, when choosing paint, color isn’t everything; there’s also the finish to consider. A flat or matte paint finish can help to hide flaws in the paint job, while a gloss paint lends a sophisticated feel. There are other types of finish between these two for homeowners who wish some kind of compromise. As with paint colors themselves, it’s possible to use multiple types of finish in one room. The walls may be one flat color while the trim is another glossy color.

Most people know to lay painter’s tape around a room to protect the trim, ceiling, and other parts of the room from stray splotches of paint. Many people will also lay down drop cloths or other floor protection of some kind. (Canvas is preferable, as these clothes last longer.) However, there is more to painting prep than just protecting the rest of the room from paint.. The homeowner also needs to prepare the walls so that they are ready to receive the paint. He should spackle any holes that need repairing and sand down any bumps.

Once this is done, it’s time to gather all tools for painting, especially the brushes. In the battle between paint brushes and rollers, it’s best to have both in one’s arsenal. That way, the painter can paint around the trim with the smaller brushes and cover large sections of wall with the larger brush. An extension pole is optional for tall areas.

Tools at the ready, it’s time to get painting, starting with the primer. Many professional painters, such as the ones you might hire from a painting company in Atlanta, will prepare the primer by mixing in a small bit of the color that will be used on the wall. That helps the paint later as it works to hide the primed wall. When it’s time for the paint, the homeowner should paint carefully, going from top to bottom in order to catch drips. He should also be careful not to over-paint. Even if the paint is very easy to see through, it’s better to do a few thin coats than one thick one. Thick coats dry slower and run more risk of being damaged. Another way to make it dry faster is to wait to paint until a dry day instead of a humid one.
