Tips for Visiting the Junkyard

Business

If you haven't visited your local junkyard before, you really need to check it out! Junk yards in Florida are a great resource for many, whether you are looking for some spare parts at a discount or want to sell your junk car. Junk yards do business differently than more traditional businesses, however, so it is a good idea to read up on them before you head to your nearest location.

What You Need to Know About Junkyards

There are hundreds of treasures waiting for you at your local junkyard, but if you don't know what you are looking for (or how to find it), then someone else will undoubtedly snatch it up. Visiting a junkyard is a unique experience, so the following list outlines some tips to help you navigate your local junkyard and help you find the deal you have been looking for:

  • Know your type: The more you know about your local junkyard, the more seamless and successful your experience. You can also gauge your interest in a particular junkyard if you know what you are getting yourself into. There are basically 2 types of junkyards: pick and pull and full service. Pick and pull junkyards are the most common, and they allow customers to roam the lot, peruse the junk cars, and then physically remove the parts they require on their own. If you don't know your way around a car engine or you don't like getting your hands dirty (and you don't have a boyfriend or neighbor that can do it for you) then a full service junkyard is probably more to your liking. A full service junkyard will typically inventory their items, and you can make a request for a part. If the item is available, it will be delivered to the front, where you can receive your item without ever getting your hands dirty.
  • Know your price: Junkyards are a great resource for buyers as well as sellers. Before you head out, though, check out the website of your local junkyard. In most cases you will be able to get an online or over-the-phone quote for the car or part you are trying to sell. Take this quote down to the junkyard for an expedited and haggle-free sale of your vehicle.
  • Know where to go: Junkyards can be labyrinthine lots that seeming to go on for miles. You can wander these spaces for decades, but not if you don't know where to go! On the whole, junkyard layouts follow a predictable pattern: In-demand parts will be up front. These are your vehicles that a prone to break down, and therefore their parts are needed frequently. Rare cars, older cars, and cars that stand the test of time will be located at the back of the junkyard. This is a good rule of thumb to keep in mind that will help you to orient yourself once you walk through the gates of your local junkyard. Some lots may inventory their stuff or provide a more sophisticated system, so make sure you ask about location of parts before you enter.

Come with the right equipment: If you are heading to one of the many pick and pull junk yards in Florida, keep in mind that you will need to provide your own tools for removing and then taking away the parts you need. Keep all of the essentials (that you know you will need) in your tool bag. It is a good idea to keep anything you might need as a backup in your trunk. You never know what rare find or awesome part you may pick up at your local junkyard!
