4 Fun Things to Do on Vacation in DC

Travel & Tourism

One of vacation spots in the US with the most diverse lineup of things to do and areas to see is Washington, DC. The district boasts some of the nation's best museums, parks, shopping, and architecture. It's a good place for people who like history and art, but can also be appreciated by people who like to eat tasty food and pick up high-end products. Here you can find a list of the places you have to stop by during your trip, from excellent museums to the best shopping in DC.

Museums

What would a trip to DC be without a trip to one of the more 19 museums in the vicinity. There is something for everyone in these cultural institutions. You can stop by the Smithsonian Institution Building to pick up a map and get advice on where to head first. Most visitors choose to focus on one museum per visit, as each museum has more exhibits than you could see with 2 weeks at each.

There Smithsonian Museums in Washington include the American History Museum, the Air and Space Museum, and the Natural History Museum. The Air and Space will be great if you have someone in your family who loves the history of flight and NASA. The museum showcases some of the most famous crafts that have ever flown, as well as a lot of information about how planes and jets were improved over the history of the U.S. If you want to see all manner of animals, both living today and extinct, you'll want to go to the Natural History Museum. Take a family vote, and tailor your choices and find the priceless artifacts that most strike your fancy.

National Memorials

The National Mall is one of the most concentrated, if not the most concentrated, place for war and peace memorials. This is the place where Martin Luther King, Jr. on August 28, 1963, led the famous march that ended with his "I Have a Dream Speech." While you bask in the atmosphere of historical significance, you'll want to walk around to the Lincoln Memorial, Jefferson Memorial, Washington Monument, Vietnam Memorial, Korean War Memorial and the World War II Memorial. These pieces of history make for an emotionally heavy day, but you have to see them to understand the scale of conflicts America has survived, and the leaders that made the country what it is.

Washington National Cathedral

If you want a little taste of early architecture that looks like a small slice of Europe, you can head to the National Cathedral. This is a Catholic cathedral that is the sixth-largest in the world. Construction on the cathedral began in 1907. The cathedral was designed with a Gothic style to look like cathedrals from the 1400s in Europe.

Shopping and Dining

If focusing on history is too heavy to focus on every day of your trip, it's well worth it to make your way to the best shopping in DC. Montgomery County is a great place to relax before and after your journey to the center of DC. Here, you can grab a meal of freshly caught seafood or fresh deli sandwiches. Then make your way to the specialty boutiques nearby. People come from all over the country to shop at these boutiques. Whether you're looking for clothes, purses, or souvenirs for the unlucky friends who were left at home while you traveled to Washington, this area can provide you with all of the above. With these suggestions, you can plan a balanced trip for the whole family.
