Hello there! To celebrate a bit of a milestone, I decided to make this week's review a top anime post. I am going to share with you all my top three favorite anime series of all time. They should sound familiar, I've actually already blogged about each of them. What am I celebrating? Just a few days ago I brought the total number of anime shows stored in my database up to two hundred, which may not seem like a lot, but it is an achievement and I plan on celebrating it. So, let's get started! #3 - Neon Genesis Evangelion This anime series has to be in my top three since it was the first anime series that I ever truly go into. For real, I watched it about four or five times through. Add in all of the fanfiction I've read in this category, the hilarious "outtakes" that were once on YouTube, and the rebuilds, I've spent quite a lot of time watching this show. This is not a happy show, however, which is part of the reason it is so great. The story is something that you get sucked into. You feel for the main characters as they progress throughout the story. Every time something good happens to, well any of them, something ten times worse comes right around the corner. I especially like this anime because of the ending, and by ending I mean the ending of the movie that takes place after the series and not the series itself. It's one of the most closed, yet open endings I have ever seen. The series leaves the possibilities open for how the characters move on, but it also is a solid conclusion to the story. It's weird, yet satisfying. This is part of the reason why I believe fanfiction novels based off this series are so successful. If you don't know the plot of Neon Genesis, I'm gonna tell you! This anime starts off after a global catastrophe known as second impact. We find out that sacred documents known as the Dead Sea Scrolls predict the untimely arrival of monstrous beings known as angels. Traditional military methods will not work against these foes. NERV, a militaristic organization, is put in charge of protecting humanity from these angels (at least...that's what you are lead to "believe"). They have a secret up their sleeve in the form of humanoid robots known as Evangelions. They are going to fight monsters with monsters. These Eva's are piloted by select "children," you will find out why later, that end up being our main characters. Shinji, Asuka, and Rei make up the main three pilots and the main three characters of the story. #2 - Log Horizon Pretty much my obsession right now; no seriously, I rock out to the theme song at least three times a day. Unlike its brothers that fall under the "kids stuck in a video game" umbrella, Log Horizon has a very key aspect that makes it different. The story progresses along and all the while views this "fake" world as a real one. The players must find a way to live out their lives in this world. They must find a way to establish law and order in a world that previously had none. I love how much the series focuses on the world and the political side of negotiations and such. You get a front row seat to a bunch of gamers trying to establish an economy and laws. Aspects of the game, we find out, are also becoming real (Cough, flavor text). We get to see the domino effect that happens in this world whenever the people don't do certain quests. It's truly amazing to watch and be a part of. So what's the story behind this anime? Well, the basis is that a bunch of gamers get stuck in a game. However, it differs from others in the fact that this "game" was just a regular MMO that they played on their computer. So being thrown into the world is a little bit more jarring. They must learn the combat system instead of relying on the commands and menus. At the center of it all, we have our main character; Shiroe, the strategist. Shiroe is a widely respected player for his knowledge and legendary strategy skills, earning him the nickname the villain in glasses. He doesn't know it at the beginning, but he is the key to everything. His plans will put in motion a government-like party in the major city they reside in. He establishes law and order in this chaotic world, making sure that everyone remains safe. He also takes the forefront with relations with the people of the land (formerly NPCs). The mind of Shiroe is something that is truly inspiring. #1 - Sword Art Online There it is! My all time favorite! It's amazing. It's glorious. It's SAO. This is one of my favorite anime series simply because it encompasses a lot of different genres. Action, adventure, drama, friendship, and even romance! I absolutely fell in love with the characters as early as the first arc. I am so happy that this series is still continuing to be made. There is another movie coming out and season three at some point. I would have loved for the story to go more in depth along the first arc, but that just wouldn't be SAO's style! SAO is more about the characters and their interactions with each other. Mainly Kirito, the badass main character. I've watched this series four times, twice in dub and twice in sub. Every time I watch it I pick up on things that I missed that adds even more to the story. Sword Art Online is a groundbreaking new virtual reality MMORPG that has just been released from BETA. The players unsuspectingly log in on the opening day only to find that their log out buttons are not functioning. This is because the game was built to be a trap, the GM wanted to create his own world, even at the expense of everyone's lives. This is only the first arc of the story, but since I don't want to spoil anything else, I'll leave all of that out. All I can say is you get taken on the magical journey of Kirito as he turns from a loner to someone who has some friends, and eventually finds love. It's so awesome!!! There you have it, I'm sure most will disagree with me, but this is my top three anime series. They all are pretty amazing and I wouldn't for sure recommend them to anyone. I do lean more toward the action and adventure genres, but I am also a sucker for a good romance anime. Hope you enjoyed it!! Written By: Kyle Hawk Want to find a new anime series to watch?
