Is the name chandela dynasty of familiarity to you? This dynasty carved out their empire through the dense jungles of central Asia. They were a dynasty of brave, intelligent rulers and they served great purposes in the history of India. However they are not famous for what they did or how their rulers thrived but for what they built. Chandela’s built an entire city of fortresses, monuments and temples which were pleasure palaces. There grandeur is not simply restricted to this they even attracted people for certain Vedic scripts and literature obtained of that time. The script Kama Shastra popularly known today as Kamasutra was obtained here. Knowledge of sex This dynasty was the first to provide knowledge on sex. They explored and delved through the layers of pleasure and experimented with different sexual postures to come with tips and tricks of how to provide pleasure to the maximum. They emphasized on the importance of ensuring that your partner feels pleasure and not just you. However the history of sex education should not be narrowed down to imply simply the art of pleasure giving and receiving, it was much more than that. In fact this knowledge was used to explain the different happening and events in the universe and hence served a much larger purpose. The Temple Many make the mistake of assuming the temple is simply a monument constructed to praise and idolise sex and pleasure. It is even considered by some as a temple of debauchery however it is much more meaningful than sex. The temple is a symbol of the unification of God Shiva and Goddess Parvati. These two Gods are soulmates united through love. Lord Shiva the lord of destruction was tamed through love and this temple signifies that. Lord Ganesha is the product of the union of these two Gods. It is moreover assumed that the existence of the universe and the reason for the presence of all beings and things in this world is a result of that union. Even though the temple has sculptures and images considered erotic and graphic it is not something to be overlooked. The chandela’s constructed many temples and fortresses, the eighty sixth one still remains strong and erect. This temple is called the Temple of Love. However its real name is Kandariya Mahadeva. It was named after lord Shiva as he is idolised in this temple. Reasons for study The reason for the Karmasutra was not narrow and selfish. It was not aimed at simply studying sex and making note of different ways to engage in sexual activities but to comprehend the vast knowledge which the world holds within itself. The study was done several decades ago but its words still have significance and importance in the present day and age. Chandela have stated many ways and practises which are tried by many in India and abroad. Their monuments and their literature speaks more words than most other dynasties, the impact they have created is yet to be diminished.
