If escaping winter’s wrath and packing up the house to move south is on your bucket list, then Florida should definitely be a serious contender for any final destination and the Gulf Coast metropolitan area in and around Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater a primary focus of your search. Whether you’re looking to build a new home or simply renovate an old one, there are plenty of choices when it comes to builders and contractors, not the least of which would be a construction company in Spring Hill, which is just up the road. In fact, the towns of Spring Hill and neighboring Hernando Beach should be a destination consideration as well, given their proximity to so many of Florida’s natural wonders and proximity to the urban centers of Tampa, St. Petersburg, and Clearwater. A few years back, Forbes Magazine ranked Tampa as the 5th best city for those who enjoy the outdoors, and a survey conducted by the Pew Research Center around the same time found that Tampa was the 5th most popular city where people wanted to live. All sorts of factors come into play, but when you consider that the top 10 cities in the Pew survey were either in the West or the South, you have to believe that the weather plays a huge role. Interestingly, Tampa has a relatively temperate climate for Florida, given that it’s located far enough north in the state that the United States Department of Agriculture categorizes it as being in hardiness zone 10. That zone is what they determine to be the northernmost limit of where coconut and royal palms can grow. Though cities such as Chicago and New York have almost annual occurrences of 100 degree plus temperatures, Tampa’s record high has only been 99 degrees! Certainly the Gulf Coast breezes are a mitigating factor when it comes to both heat and cold and being right on Tampa Bay tends to keep the temperatures in Tampa within a smaller range than those areas further inland. Yet all the wonderful weather alone wouldn’t be a motivating factor if there wasn’t much to do in the area, and the mild temperatures year-round certainly contribute to the activities that one can do. After all, you’ll find few people on the golf course, the beach, or at outdoor cafes in January in the Midwest or Northeast. What draws tourists to the area every year is also what motivates people to move to Florida and that’s the variety of things one can do without concern for the weather being a hindrance. Winters in the Tampa area typically see highs on average near 70 degrees and mostly sunny skies. Average lows seldom drop below freezing, and that typically occurs once every other year! Finally, unlike California, housing in Tampa and the surrounding area is much more reasonably priced. For instance, if you simply go outside the city, but within close proximity to Tampa, you’ll find average home prices in towns like Spring Hill come in under $100,000. You’d be hard-pressed to find a studio condominium in California for that price. In addition, you’ll have no problem finding a construction company in Spring Hill or nearby that can build your house or renovate one that you purchase. So are you still shivering every winter and shoveling your way out of the garage? Maybe it’s time that you reconsider your options and seek a much more pleasant climate where snow isn’t a four-letter word because it’s something that happens elsewhere. Isn’t it time you gave up on being climate challenged and scratch moving south off of your bucket list?
