What Every Lawn Needs to Grow

Gardening

With spring just around the corner, you’re probably looking forward to spending some time outdoors. There is no better feeling than soft green grass underneath your feet. However, getting your lawn soft and green is a whole different story. Whether you look for local landscaping companies in Marietta or simply do the work yourself, here’s a list of what every lawn needs in order to thrive.

Water

All plants need water in order to thrive. However, don’t go setting your sprinklers to turn on automatically each day. If your lawn isn’t established or it’s dry, it will need to be watered frequently. Once it is green and established, however, it’s best to space watering sessions out. This will help to protect the root. If you’re not sure whether your lawn needs to be watered, step on your blades of grass. If they lose their spring and don’t bounce back, they need to be watered more. In an effort to conserve water and avoid evaporation, water in the early morning or at night. It’s best to move your drip hoses 8 inches every half hour or so to ensure that each area is adequately saturated.

Aeration

Aerating your lawn involves poking small holes all along the surface of your lawn. This allows water, air, nutrients, and fertilizer to sink deeper into the soil and penetrate the roots of your grass. This can make your lawn more luscious and green. It’s best to do this during the spring. This will set your lawn up for a full season of healthy growth. Depending on the type of lawn that you have, you could aerate your lawn yearly.

Fertilizer

Every lawn needs nutrients and fertilizer. However, the amount needed will vary greatly depending on the soil that it’s planted in. If the soil is super rich, you won’t need quite as much fertilizer. Especially if you are mulching your lawn with grass clippings, there is a good chance your blades are getting the food that they need. Either way, your lawn should be fertilized at least once a year. During the spring, use a fertilizer that is high in nitrogen to boost growth. Once fall begins to set in, you want to use a potassium-rich fertilizer. This will strengthen the roots of your grass. It’s extremely important to note that using an abundance of fertilizer won’t help your lawn. In fact, it could hurt it. Over feeding your lawn could result in fungi or growth problems.

Trimming

Your lawn needs to be mowed anytime it is growing. If the ground isn’t frozen, it’s time to break out the lawn mower. To start out, it’s best to mow your lawn once a week with the blades set to the highest setting. Then, once spring is over, and your grass begins to grow more rapidly, lower the blades and mow your lawn 2-3 times a week. If possible, consider collecting the grass clippings and chopping them up into fine mulch. Then, redistribute them onto your lawn. This will help to return some of the nutrients, making your grass much more lush and green. If you find large grass clipping on your grass though, be sure to rake them up. They could prevent growing grass from getting the sun and water that it needs.

Get your lawn as green and luscious as possible this year. With help from local landscaping companies in Marietta and a little bit of fertilizer, your time spent outdoors will be enjoyed. Don’t let your season be anything short of amazing. With green soft grass underneath your feet, this will be the best summer yet.
