9 Dos and Don'ts of Landscaping

Gardening

Whether you are new to the landscaping thing or a seasoned veteran, there is a lot you need to know; especially when it comes to front yard landscaping in Surprise, AZ. With the dry climate and hard ground to deal with, it can be difficult to know where to start. Here are a few dos and don’ts to help even the beginners in landscaping begin their yard transformation:

  1. Do wait until the weather is warm and the ground has thawed to begin planting. Otherwise, the ground will be hard. This can make it difficult for plants roots to develop and expand as they need to in order for your greenery to grow!
  2. Do remove old, dead plants. If you still have the remains of last year’s plants hanging around your garden, get rid of them. These dried plants can make it difficult for buds growing below them to receive the water and moisture that they need to thrive.
  3. Don’t forget to fertilize! In the spring and fall, spread some fertilizer on your lawn to help it grow and stay healthy.
  4. Do use different fertilizers depending on the season. Depending on your grass, you’ll want to find a fertilizer with different nutrient makeups. For example, in the spring, you’ll want a fertilizer that will help your grass to grow thick and soft. In the fall, however, it’s more important for the roots of your grass to get the nutrients that they need in order to stay healthy until the next warm season.
  5. Don’t over-mow or under-mow your grass. The amount that your grass needs to be mowed will vary throughout the spring and fall. Don’t set a hard and fast rule about when you’ll mow it. Instead, examine how much it is growing and plan accordingly. In the spring, you’ll probably only need to trim it once a week. However, once it starts growing faster during the summer, you may need to start mowing in 2-3 times a week.
  6. Do use the blade adjuster on your lawn mower. By adjusting the level of the blade on your mower, you can actually make your grass healthier. During the spring, it’s better to let your grass grow a little bit longer. This will give it a chance to become more established. Then, in the summer, lower the blade so your grass will be shorter. This will prevent it from drying out easily and let you go longer between mows.
  7. Don’t water during the day. In the heat of the summer, you should only water during the evenings or mornings. This will keep the water from evaporating.
  8. Do pay attention to where the sun hits your yard. Before you start planning your landscaping, know where the sun is the strongest in your yard. Plants and flowers all thrive in different amounts of sunlight and water. Be sure to know the requirements of each plant before they go in the ground. Otherwise, you could end up with some dead flowers before the season is over.
  9. Do hire a professional. Maintaining your yard can be a lot of work. From pruning and mowing to planting and fertilizing, don’t let this season wear you out. Instead, consider hiring a professional maintenance service. These experts can handle as much or as little of your yard work as you would like, making the summer months more enjoyable for you.

When it comes to taking care of your yard, there’s a lot to know. If you are concerned about getting your landscaping up to par, it’s time to let the professionals step in. Let experts handle your back and front yard landscaping in Surprise, AZ and watch your landscaping transform into something beautiful!
