Hello and welcome to this week's random anime of the week! This week we are taking a look at our very first parody series! This series, Sword Art Online Abridged, is a parody version of the official release. It is completely fan made by a group that calls themselves Something Witty Entertainment. The series is available on YouTube and is currently up to nine episodes, covering most of the Aincrad arc of the original series. Something Witty Entertainment has taken its viewers by heart with their creativity to take an already successful franchise, and create an outstanding parody that holds its own. The group uses mostly the animation from the original series and adds in there own little things such as mouth movements, illustrations, and such. In fact, they even have some scenes where they do the animation themselves (None of which includes the copyrighted characters, of course). So you haven't seen Sword Art Online, huh? Well, the original series, and the parody for that matter, takes place in the world of Aincrad. Aincrad is a floating castle in a sky that is completely virtual; that's right, it's a virtual reality game. SAO is the first game that fully utilizes the specs of an awesome new "console" known as NerveGear. This gear is placed over the user's head and they are transported to the virtual world, leaving their bodies safe in sound in a resting position. However, after the initial launch of the game, the players notice there is no way to log out. A quick announcement from the creator confirms that they are, in fact, stuck inside of the game. Moreover, if they die in the game, they will be killed in real life by the NerveGear itself. So that's the basis, now more about the parody! The parody, as I mentioned earlier, uses most of the same scenes from the original series. They adjust a few things such as the character's mouth movements to fit their funny dialogue. They also use the beauty of editing to transform the series into something new and, well, hilarious. The voice actors do a great job of portraying their virtual and animated counterparts. The dialogue is hilarious and well recorded, so no worries there. The story line follows the basis of that of its original counterpart with its own flare through the magic of editing. I love the new character personalities; Kirito the ill mannered one, and Asuna the crazy, obsessive girlfriend. The development of the characters within the parody is actually quite stunning, as well as the love peak between Kirito and Asuna. Now that you know about it, go check it out!
