As a travel enthusiast myself and a father of three beautiful kids, I know only too well the struggle of finding a child-friendly hotel. A good family hotel needs to offer spacious or connecting rooms, sufficient facilities and be child-friendly, all while remaining within your price range, and even more confusingly, there just isn’t a “one-size-fits-all” when it comes to finding accommodation for your family. Depending on the ages and personalities of your children, they may want to be within striking distance of the town centre and some good shops, close to the beach, somewhere quiet and secluded, or any combination of the above. That’s why I’m putting together a few short guides for families seeking hotels: this one covers my favourite accommodations in the Costa del Sol. Aparthotel Nuriasol This is a nice, simple, no-frills choice. Ideal for families seeking a quiet getaway, they’re more than happy to host small children and the location puts it close to a gorgeous beach and a few shops. The pool area accommodates youngsters as well as adults, is equipped with a children’s pool, and the quiet, relaxed atmosphere is perfect for more reserved kids. There’s also no long drive after your flight, as taxis from Malaga airport take only about 25 hours to drop you at the hotel. The low prices are kept down by the fact that the apartments are self-catering, so this is something to bear in mind before you book. Roc Las Chapas If your children are a little more high energy, I’d highly recommend Roc Las Chapas. First up, it’s not self-catered, so there’s one fewer thing to keep your eye on, besides the kids. Not only that, but there are plenty of family-friendly facilities on-site, from a play area to mini-golf. Throughout the summer, there’s also an entertainment programme aimed specially at children (an adults’ one runs year-round), not to mention the all-important pool. Roc Las Chapas also shines when it comes to location: it’s a little further from the airport than Aparthotel Nuriasol, with taxis from Malaga airport reaching Roc Las Chapas in around 45 minutes, but Marbella’s nightlife and shopping centres, not to mention a beach, are both nearby - in fact, a free bus runs into Marbella and to and from the beach. You get a lot for your money at Roc Las Chapas. Hotel Las Palmeras This hotel is most suited to the kind of holiday where you plan to be out and about all day: the rooms are clean, comfy and well-maintained, but there’s not as much in the way of facilities as at, for example, Roc Las Chapas. What you get instead are friendly staff, good rooms and a stunning location: located in central Fuengirola, Hotel Las Palmeras is within walking distance of two beaches, Fuengirola harbour, the town centre, and within easy travel distance of a wide range of sports, from tennis to equestrian sports. There’s also a local market nearby, not to mention a thriving nightlife, just in case there’s an older sibling who can babysit. Taxis from Malaga airport take only about 15 minutes. Marconfort Hotel Griego I absolutely love this hotel when I feel like some time with just the grown-ups as well as time with the family. In addition to gorgeous rooms and a top location, there’s a “miniclub” for kids aged 5-11. This means that you can rest easy in the knowledge that the little ones are being looked after and enjoy the rest of the hotel’s facilities, whether it be a classy evening in the piano bar, or a few cocktails by the pool. There’s also plenty to do with the whole family, with multiple pools, theme nights and transfers to the beach all summer. It’s also a good hotel to visit if the kids don’t like long journeys, as taxis from Malaga airport will have you there in under ten minutes on a good day. With any luck, you’ll find your perfect hotel in the Costa del Sol. Just remember: no matter your family’s needs and preferences, with a little searching you’ll find something!
