Are you planning on renting a car for a road trip? If you don’t have a credit card and plan to pay using a debit card or cash, be prepared when you get to the Las Vegas rental car center. Many people prefer to pay for trips out-of-pocket, forgoing credit cards. Unfortunately, most rental car companies make you jump through a number of hoops before you can get the keys and drive off. Be Prepared to Show Additional Identification In addition to your driver’s license and proof of insurance, you’ll also likely be required to show proof of residence. Most rental car agencies require their debit card and cash customers to show a utility bill (electric, water, gas, phone). The utility bill must meet the following requirements: - Current bill
- No past due balance
- Account must be in renter’s name
Call the rental car company ahead of time to determine if you’ll need to bring this proof with you. You’ll Pay a Deposit Unlike renters using a credit card, cash and debit customers will be required to put down a deposit in addition to pre-paying for the total cost of the rental. The deposit (for debit card users) will be taken from their bank account and held for the duration of the rental. It most likely will not be put back into the account for 7-10 business days following the rental period. The average deposit is $150-$200. You May Not Be Able to Rent Every Vehicle Some rental companies even restrict the type of vehicle you can rent if you’re not paying by credit card. You may be limited to compact or intermediate sedans. If you’re planning to rent an SUV or van, make sure you check with the Las Vegas rental car center to determine their individual rules for renting without a credit card.
